The operator piloted a new well-completion design combining inflow-control valves (ICVs) in the shallow reservoir and inflow-control devices (ICDs) in the deeper reservoir, both deployed in a water-injector well for the first time in the company’s experience. In this paper, the authors describe a project to design, field trial, and qualify an alternative solution for real-time monitoring of the oil rim in carbonate reservoirs that overcomes these disadvantages. The authors detail the development of a technique based on surface-to-borehole controlled-source electromagnetics (CSEM), which exploits the large contrast in resistivity between injected water and oil to derive 3D resistivity distributions, proportional to saturations, in the reservoir. This industry is one often considered reactive and overly tradition-bound. These new technologies, however—and, more importantly, the drive of these researchers to harness their capabilities—prove that petroleum engineers remain at the forefront of innovation and discovery.
BP and partners have sanctioned the Azeri Central East project, the next stage of development of the giant Azeri-Chirag-Deepwater Gunashli oilfield complex in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea. The vessel will produce approximately 2.5 mtpa of LNG for the project, which is expected to deliver first gas in 2022. A newly launched JIP aims to bridge the BSEE and API frameworks and achieve industry consensus on the analysis and inspection data required to assess the feasibility of an extended service life. Current production from the phase is 400 MMcf/D and expected to peak at 700 MMcf/D. A third phase also is slated to come on stream this year.
ExxonMobil signed a sales and purchase agreement with Zhejiang Provincial Energy Group for LNG supply. Zhejiang Energy is expected to receive 1 mtpa over 20 years. Coal remains the biggest challenge to LNG in Asia. The move comes weeks after Gazprom announced a final development concept for the project. Other projects Shell is developing with Gazprom, including the Sakhalin 2 export facility, will not be impacted by the decision.

Ashtead Technology has acquired Louisiana-based subsea equipment rental and cutting services specialist, Aqua-Tech Solutions, as part of the company’s international growth plans in the US. High-fidelity 3D engineering simulations are valuable in making decisions, but they can be cost-prohibitive and require significant amounts of time to execute. The integration of deep-learning neural networks with computational fluid dynamics may help accelerate the simulation process. The chemical reactions creating buildups of scale that can clog a well can be replicated in a chemical lab, but researchers are finding many more variables on the surfaces of pipes that need to be considered. Africa (Sub-Sahara) Sonangol's deepwater Orca-1 well encountered oil in the presalt layer of Block 20/11 in the Cuanza basin offshore Angola. The well reached a measured depth of 12,703 ft. Initial well tests saw flow rates of 16.3 MMcm/D of gas and 3,700 BOPD. Asia Pacific Premier Oil's Kuda Laut-1 well in Indonesia's Tuna production sharing contract has encountered 183 net ft of oil-bearing reservoir and 327 net ft of gas-bearing reservoir. Following evaluation operations, the well will be sidetracked to drill the Singa Laut prospect in an adjacent fault block. Premier is the operator (65%), with partner Mitsui Oil Exploration Company (35%). Philippines National Oil Company (PNOC) has begun drilling operations on its Baragatan-1 exploration well on service contract 63, offshore Palawan Island, west of the Philippines, using the Naga 5 jackup rig.
Africa (Sub-Sahara) Vaalco Energy started oil production from the Etame 12-H development well offshore Gabon. The well was drilled to a measured depth of approximately 3450 m and was targeting the recently discovered lower lobe of the Gamba reservoir. It was brought on line at a rate of 2,000 BOPD with no indication of hydrogen sulfide. Vaalco (28.07%) is the operator with partners Addax Petroleum (31.63%), Sasol (27.75%), Asia Pacific KrisEnergy started drilling the Rossukon-2 exploration well on Block G6/48 in the Gulf of Thailand, using the Key Gibraltar jackup rig. The well will reach a total depth at 5,462 ft and will test Early Miocene stacked fluvial sandstones on a broad structural high.
Africa (Sub-Sahara) Bowleven began drilling operations at its Zingana exploration well on the Bomono permit in Cameroon. Located 20 km northwest of Douala, Cameroon's largest city, the well will target a Paleocene (Tertiary) aged, three-way dip closed fault block. The company plans to drill the well to a depth of 2000 m and will then spud a second well in Moambe, 2 km east of Zingana. Bowleven is the operator and holds 100% interest in the license. Asia Pacific China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC) has brought its Dongfang 1-1 gas field Phase I adjustment project on line ahead of schedule. The field is located in the Yinggehai basin of the Beibu Gulf in the South China Sea and has an average water depth of 70 m. The field is currently producing 53 MMcf/D of gas and is expected to reach its peak production of 54 MMcf/D before the end of the year.
Africa (Sub-Sahara) Bowleven has started drilling operations at the Moambe exploration well on the Bomono permit in Cameroon. Moambe is the second well in a two-well program, approximately 2 km east of the first well, Zingana. It targets a previously undrilled Paleocene Tertiary three-way dip fault block containing multiple sands and will be drilled to an estimated 1620 m in measured depth. Both wells will be logged. Bowleven is the operator and holds 100% interest. Asia Pacific Murphy Oil discovered gas at its Permai exploration well in deepwater Block H in the South China Sea offshore Malaysia.
