Playing in Tlaloc's fields: Trends in archaeometric prospection in the central Mexican Highlands

Ramón, Andrés Mejia (Pennsylvania State University)

When invited to participate in this session, I was informed that archaeological presentations are uncommon occurrences at the annual meetings of the society. Thus, rather than planning this presentation around the presentation of novel techniques or new data, I review near-surface archaeogeophysical prospection as it is typically practiced in the Central Mexican Highlands. This will be done through a series of case studies, presenting the methods employed and briefly discussing the results of each study. Furthermore, I will elaborate on how advances over the last two decades in geophysical technology to which archaeology has been slow to adapt have the potential to facilitate and greatly expedite both archaeological prospection and the process of excavation itself.
