Structures of the Subgrade of the Old Nagasaki Highway and Abutment of the East Gate Bridge of Saga Castle

ABSTRACT The Mietsu Naval Dock (MND) is a Dutch Western-style naval base constructed in 1858 by the Saga clan at the Hayatsue River, 6 km north of the Ariake Sea in Japan. The MND was constructed with large-scale revetments and a complex assemblage of planks and logs on the soft Ariake clayey layer. However, this type of structure cannot currently be found in Japan. In this paper, to investigate a structure of similar period on soft Ariake clayey layer to understand the wooden structure of the MND, the structures of the subgrade of the old Nagasaki Highway and the abutment of the East Gate bridge of Saga Castle were examined using an unconfined compression test and cone and hardness penetration tests in the excavated trench. INTRODUCTION The Mietsu Naval Dock (MND) is a Dutch Western-style naval base constructed in 1858 by the Saga clan at the Hayatsue River, 6 km north of the Ariake Sea in Japan (Fig. 1). The MND was constructed with large-scale revetments with a complex assemblage of planks and logs on the soft Ariake clayey layer (The Chokokan Museum, 1785). However, this type of structure cannot currently be found in Japan (Shogaki and Nakano, 2017). In this paper, to investigate a structure of similar period on a soft Ariake clayey layer to understand the wooden structure of the MND, the structures of the subgrade of the old Nagasaki Highway and the abutment of the East Gate bridge of Saga Castle were examined using an unconfined compression test (UCT), portable cone (PCPT) (JGS 2015)and hardness penetration tests in the excavated trench. STRUCTURE OF THE SUBGRADE OF THE OLD NAGASAKI HIGHWAY AND THE PENETRATION DEPTH OF THE SOIL HARDNESS METER Figures 2 and 3 show the layout of the old Saga Castle and its East Gate (Kamaeguchi). The Kamaeguchi is the starting point of the old Nagasaki Highway from Saga Castle to Kokura and Nagasaki. An aerial photo of the excavation site in 2016 is shown in Photograph 1, with the foundation structures of the subgrade of the old Nagasaki Highway and the abutment of the East Gate bridge marked as A and B, respectively. The excavated trench at site A is shown in Photograph 2. The foundation structure is compacted with high-density material, featuring alternate layers of sandy and clayey soils. The results of the grain-size analysis and the physical characteristics of these materials are shown in Fig. 4 and Table 1, respectively, as well as those of the clay and sand obtained from the wall of the MND. The fine fraction content (Fc) and plasticity index (Ip) of the compacted clay for the east gate bridge are 97% and 44%, respectively, and greater than for 83% and 28% for the clay obtained from the wall of the MND.
