ABSTRACT Submerged waterjet propeller has the advantages of high propulsion efficiency in a wide range of speeds, good anti-cavitation performance, shallow draft. Thus, it is worth exploring the application in transport vessels on inland rivers. In order to explore the design method of the submerged waterjet propelled vessel and guide the design of the waterjet, in this paper, a submerged waterjet propelled vessel is designed, and its hydrodynamic characteristics such as thrust deduction are researched. Through the computational fluid dynamics method, we calculated and analyzed the open water performance of the waterjet and the flow field around the hull. The results show that when the advanced coefficient is in the range of 1.0 to 1.6, the open water efficiency of the submerged waterjet is more than 60%, which has the potential to adapt to the multi-working conditions of the transport vessels on inland rivers. In addition, the thrust deduction caused by the inlet channel of the waterjet accounts for 56.2% of the total thrust deduction. So in the design, it is necessary to consider the influence of the inlet channel shape on the resistance performance. This research can provide references for the hull and propulsor design of submerged waterjet propelled transport vessels on inland rivers. In addition, due to the structural characteristics of the submerged waterjet, to a certain extent, it reduces the impact of vessels on aquatic life, and meets the needs of environmental protection. Therefore, the application of submerged waterjet propeller in inland river ships is worthy of further exploration.
INTRODUCTION The demand for freight volume of transport ship on inland river is increasing. The increase of freight volume means that the propeller needs larger diameter to meet the thrust demand. However, due to the limitation of water depth of inland waterway, the ship draft is limited. It is difficult for large vessels to provide enough tail space for largediameter propellers, which brings difficulties to the enlargement of transport vessels on inland rivers. The submerged waterjet is a special propulsor embedded in the bottom of the ship and semi-integrated with the hull, and it has high power density, which effectively solves the problem of space limitation of the stern. It has the characteristics of high propulsion efficiency in a wide range of speed, and can meet the needs of multi-working conditions of transport vessels on inland river.
