Ongoing growth in the volume of raw data generated by digitized oil and gas operations has been widely documented (Spath, 2014). What may be less apparent is that the industry is also authoring dramatically more unstructured content--interpretations, learnings, case studies, etc.--on an annual basis. This is not surprising, as anecdotal evidence suggests that most decisions are taken on the basis of unstructured data (Quaadgras & Beath, 2011) (Garland, 2017) (Palkowsky, 2005) (Haines, Shaughnessy, & Briggs, 2006) (Hollingsworth & Schey, 2017). At the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the number of new papers published annually has followed an exponential growth curve that doubles approximately every 10-11 years, beginning as far back as the early 1950's. Beyond books, journals, and conference papers available through the OnePetro digital library, SPE content comprises articles from print (the Journal of Petroleum Technology), digital-only publications (Oil and Gas Facilities, The Way Ahead and HSE Now), a variety of general-interest web pages, and technical resources (PetroWiki and SPE Connect). Well over 200,000 distinct items--papers or web pages--are available through the SPE's web sites as of May 2018. For oil and gas professionals looking for information from SPE content, the growing volume of information and diversity of sources has made it increasingly hard to find the relevant content quickly.
Sharing information, as an effective way of conducting business, is not a new concept; however, the communication tools we use to deliver this information have significantly evolved over the past 10 years. Today, sharing expert knowledge can be performed at the click of a mouse. Intranets, located within a corporation's firewalls, provide the potential for an ongoing, free exchange of both confidential and nonconfidential information. Yet the simple posting of information to the intranet often leaves the intended beneficiaries inefficiently mining for information, which they may or may not eventually locate.
The EnviroHub is an intranet web site designed to disseminate information to promote cultural change, integration of the Environment (E) into the Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) management system (MS), and beyond-compliance environmental performance. Developing The EnviroHub involved standard web-design activities, as well as information-management maximization strategies, an organizational structure for information and data creation, identification of new resources and increased user functionality.
The EnviroHub affords easy access to information so that it is readily available for uniform implementation throughout a global organization. Information and data managed within The EnviroHub include Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) laws and regulations in more than 100 countries worldwide, multilingual/multinational resources, and tools for compliance with a corporation's environmental standards. This paper presents the strategies used for maximizing information management, such as user requirements, web page design and management system integration. Finally, it discusses increased functionalities, such as secure workrooms, which provide confidential work areas for designated users, and subscription capabilities, which allow users to receive automatic e-mail alerts.
Organizational and personal productivity have increased with the advent of the intranet. This increased workplace productivity leads to improved environmental performance levels for the organization; however, information-technology (IT)-savvy leadership realizes these performance gains are not always commensurate with the motivation of today's employees to improve environmental performance and the level of organizational resources committed to the preservation of our environment.
The growing wealth of available environmental information complicates the maze between intended users and content. Web-design and document-creation tools enable greater functionality, creativity and artistic appeal without necessarily maximizing ease of use and minimizing search time.
Historically, web users encounter systematic delays in their search for content. Pages with elegant design and graphics significantly increase download time. Web pages with links to other web pages, rather than content, increase data mining time. Also, such pathways allow for more "wrong turns," which often leave the user without the needed content. Search engines that deliver hundreds of "hits" on irrelevant content further decrease the productivity of the user and the organization. Users in remote areas already face lengthy download times because of low bandwidth. These issues only complicate matters for remote users. As a result, users often become discouraged with the intranet. A tool that should make users more productive decreases the organization's capabilities.
Ordovician G. prisca kukersites provide a potential source for the Red River oil in the Williston basin of North Dakota; consequently, the identification of these intervals can be critical when planning completions. Although kukersites are very organic-rich [total organic content (TOC) up to 59% in the literature], identification of these beds using standard openhole logs is hindered because the kukersites generally occur only as thin laminae or beds of less than 1-ft thickness. This is well below the vertical resolution of most openhole tools. With a vertical resolution of approximately 0.10 in., microresistivity imaging tools can detect thin organic-rich beds; however resistivity alone cannot be used to accurately distinguish between an organic-rich bed and other resistive beds such as anhydrite.
Published literature suggests algal blooms associated with kukersite deposition would have slowed or stopped carbonate sedimentation; consequently, the first step in the identification of kukersites is to use microresistivity image data to identify thin beds or laminae with high resistivity in dolomitic intervals. After these initial candidates are identified, triple combination data is examined to rule out lithologies with similar resistivities but strong identifying signals, such as anhydrite, to reduce the number of potential kukersite candidates to approximately 20 beds. An elemental analysis tool was used to further investigate the likelihood the beds identified were kukersite. An Estonian study showed kukersites to contain approximately 1.5% total sulfur. Therefore, sulfur was used when solving for kerogen with the elemental analysis within the Red River Formation. When solving in this manner, the kerogen signals in the elemental analysis were found to correspond closely with many of the possible kukersites identified in the image data. Kukersite-rich intervals are likely to be found where the potentially organic-rich thin beds identified in both tools overlap. Sidewall cores collected in these intervals appear to have the same visual characteristics as kukersites described in published literature; however, the full analysis of these cores have not yet been completed.
This case study demonstrates how solutions to difficult problems can be provided by using an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates all available data as well as a fundamental knowledge of the geologic environment in which the problem exists.
A safety professional directs or assists in planning and developing education and training materials or courses related to designs, policies, procedures and programs involving hazard recognition and control 1 . OSHA requires employers to provide effective information and training for their employees before initial job assignment and periodically thereafter 2 . Performance-based safety standards expect employees to apply this knowledge to their work and become safer and healthier as a result. To be effective, presentations must make a lasting impression; somewhere between let me entertain you and safety snoozer. Adults are a tough audience.
