There are numerous issues involved in constructing a petroleumengineering curriculum. An institution not only may consider global issues, but it also may consider only those issues that are applicable to a particular region or situation. By no means do we claim that this study is a complete picture of all of the universities involved and the issues they face.
This paper presents a critical review and evaluation of petroleum engineering curricula of leading schools in the USA and the Middle East, and examines their adequacy for coping with technological developments and future industry needs. Potential changes to curricula structures and content are presented and examined considering the current industry emphasis on shale gas development. A proposal to establish an SPE accreditation system for petroleum engineering progams worldwide is also presented. The objective is to set the stage for petroleum engineering educators and industry to jointly plan for and engage in taking decisive actions to improve petroleum engineering education. A quick review of petroleum engineering curricula shows that we have been using the same structure and content for decades. While the industry is developing and adopting new technologies at a rapid pace, petroleum engineering education has experienced very little changes. While a limited number of courses experienced some changes such as including horizontal, multilateral and under balanced drilling in drilling engineering courses, the majority of courses are still using the materials developed in the 1960's. No curriculum adequately addresses the very important shale gas developments; indeed, many petroleum engineering faculty are not familiar with this area. It is essential that both industry and academia collaborate to determine and prioritize industry needs and the ways to develop petroleum engineering education to meet these needs.
While the attention of all engineering branches is focused today on changesand improvements in the several curricula, we are concerned here with the manyquestions arising in industry and college concerning the preparation for thepetroleum engineering profession. The succession of problems confronting thepetroleum engineer demands a degree of versatility not ordinarily encounteredin other professions. As a consequence, the student cannot acquire mastery ofall the several engineering branches represented in field practice, and as analternative, he has learned to appreciate the value of thorough training in thebasic or fundamental sciences as a preliminary foundation for professionalwork.
While our attention is directed primarily to the training of engineers ineducational institutions, it is necessary that the ultimate education of theprofessional engineer be kept in mind. It is apparent that his success as anengineer is limited not only by his educational and job experience, but by hisnative endowments: mentality, personality and health. The engineer's lack ofjob experiences often proves as much a handicap as the lack of adequate collegetraining. If the final product proves to be satisfactory, both industry andtechnical institutions are to be congratulated. However, if the product isfound wanting, the one most responsible should be apprehended.
Fitness for Profession
For the most part, students of engineering colleges have had their interestsin applied science awakened at a relatively early age. Many of them enteredcollege as a convenient means of acquiring a technical education, butundoubtedly would have had better prospects in a shorter program offered byinstitutions of noncollege grade. The activating motive of practical interestis also strong in students suitable for college training, but in many cases anintellectual interest must be awakened in order that it may survivegraduation.
