The SPE Gulf Coast Section’s Project, Facilities, and Construction study group is hosting a series of lectures, “What Have We Learned About Host Selection in Deepwater GOM After 20 Years of Being Off the Shelf? The development of compact topside processing plants for floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels is a growing industry trend that can reduce operating and capital expenditures over the life of the vessel, a researcher and scientist said recently. Expenditures for floating production systems are expected to more than double in the next five years. This growth is driven by multiple factors. Investments in floating production systems are expected to increase sharply over the next five years, driven by a surge in installations.
Logistical work is taking place in advance of subsea installation activities, which have the large UK North Sea field on track for first oil in 2019. After severe damage in a typhoon, the Huizhou oil field in the South China Sea was back on production in 5.5 months. This paper reviews how this feat was accomplished.
The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative has announced a technical and financial sponsorship commitment of nearly $1 million to the Payne Institute for Public Policy at Colorado School of Mines to develop a transparent web platform to support real-time mapping and tracking of global gas flaring data. A billion-dollar fund will be available for innovations in flare minimization, venting elimination, fugitive-emissions reduction, and complete combustion.
Williams, CPPIB To Form $3.8-Billion Appalachia Midstream JV The combination will operate and share ownership of midstream gas assets in the Utica and Marcellus Shale plays. CPPIB financially backs operator Encino Energy, which last year acquired Chesapeake Energy’s Utica assets. The high level of dissolved iron commonly present in the Marcellus waters of Pennsylvania and West Virginia adversely affects the ability of scale inhibitor to inhibit calcium carbonate scale.
The cost cuts made during the downturn and the recent increase in oil prices have led to some global offshore projects becoming economically viable. Norway is leading the comeback. A rise in oil prices close to 3-year highs should further stimulate a recovering oilfield services and equipment sector, despite lower than expected late-2017 activity in US shale.
Oil production from the Canadian oil sands is big, growing, and its future is in doubt. The problem is the cost and time required to develop new production is not competitive now. While some big international oil companies are selling out, others are focused on changing the economics of growth. The addition of a hydrocarbon condensate to steam operations in heavy-oil and bitumen reservoirs has emerged as a potential technology to improve not only oil recovery but also energy efficiency.
The Hebron platform was successfully installed on the Grand Banks offshore Newfoundland and Labrador in June 2017. It consists of a single-shaft concrete gravity-based structure (GBS) supporting an integrated drilling and production topsides. This paper discusses ExxonMobil’s focus on the next phase of its safety journey through advancement of individual awareness and decision making to help drive breakthroughs in the operator’s vision of safety. The Hebron field off the east coast of Canada has begun production 37 years after it was discovered. Production is expected to peak at 150,000 B/D and ultimately yield about 700 million bbl of oil over the field's life.
In this paper, a new type of sand-consolidation low-viscous binding material, based on a combination of inorganic and organic components, is presented. Researchers have developed a novel water-based-drilling-fluid system compatible with deepwater HP/HT wells in the Lingshui Block on the basis of a conventional drilling fluid and further optimization. The combination of ultrasonic pulse-echo and flexural-attenuation measurements was adopted in this project in the South China Sea for cement-integrity evaluation. Weather conditions aging offshore facilities presented challenges during a monsoon in the South China Sea. This paper presents the results of a performance-improvement effort in extended-reach drilling (ERD) in three campaigns in the Huizhou HZ 25-4 oil field in the South China Sea.
