Decisions in E&P ventures are affected by Bias, Blindness, and Illusions (BBI) which permeate our analyses, interpretations and decisions. This one-day course examines the influence of these cognitive pitfalls and presents techniques that can be used to mitigate their impact. Bias refers to errors in thinking whereby interpretations and judgments are drawn in an illogical fashion. Blindness is the condition where we fail to see an unexpected event in plain sight. Illusions refer to misleading beliefs based on a false impression of reality. All three can lead to poor decisions regarding which work to undertake, what issues to focus on, and whether to forge ahead or walk away from a project. Strategic thinking and planning are key elements in an organisation’s journey to maximise value to shareholders, customers, and employees. Through this workshop, attendees will go through the different processes involved in strategic planning including the elements of organisational SWOT, business scenario and options development, elaboration of strategic options and communication to stakeholders. Examples are provided including corporate, business unit and department case studies. This seminar will teach participants how to identify, evaluate, and quantify risk and uncertainty in everyday oil and gas economic situations. It reviews the development of pragmatic tools, methods, and understandings for professionals that are applicable to companies of all sizes. The seminar also briefly reviews statistics, the relationship between risk and return, and hedging and future markets.

This course covers the fundamental principles concerning how hydraulic fracturing treatments can be used to stimulate oil and gas wells. It includes discussions on how to select wells for stimulation, what controls fracture propagation, fracture width, etc., how to develop data sets, and how to calculate fracture dimensions. This work focuses on the development of specific methodologies to support managed-pressure-dilling (MPD) operations implemented on real-time diagnostic software. In hydraulic fracturing, the use of diagnostic-fracture-injection tests (DFITs) can provide valuable information. This paper offers an analytical model for estimating the transient temperature at a given depth and timestep, for computing the BHP. To achieve optimal production from unconventional reservoirs, it is useful to determine the permeability, pore pressure, and state of stress of rock strata. This paper attempts to describe some of the common problems and to help prevent some common errors often observed in diagnostic fracture injection tests (DFITs) execution and analysis.
Personnel are returning to platforms in the Gulf of Mexico after Hurricane Sally was downgraded to a tropical depression late Wednesday, but the threat of another major hurricane remains as a tropical storm may form in the Gulf of Mexico today. A case study in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico in which pressure transient analysis, fractional flow, and production logging tools were integrated to identify correctly the cause of, and execute an effective remedy for, a well’s productivity deterioration. As part of an effort to evaluate existing riser systems, an operator launched an inspection and testing program to investigate risers retrieved following well abandonment after a service life of nearly 10 years in the Gulf of Mexico. The largest lease sale in the history of the area attracts $139 million in total bids, a $2 million increase over the previous lease sale held last August. Integrated surveillance is critical for understanding reservoir dynamics and improving field management.
Bahareh Nojabaei is a PhD student at the Pennsylvania State University. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in 2006 and 2009, with concentrated studies in mechanical engineering and energy conversion. She interned as a reservoir engineer with InPetro Technologies Inc. in 2014 and worked as a petroleum engineer, performing diagnostic fracture injection testing analysis for Hess Corporation in 2011. Nojabaei co-authored a paper, "Modeling Wellbore Transient Fluid-Temperature and Pressure During Diagnostic Fracture Injection Testing in Unconventional Reservoirs" that was published in 2014 in the Journal of Canadian Petroleum Technology. In 2013, her paper, "Effect of Capillary Pressure on Phase Behavior in Tight Rocks and Shales" became one of the top downloads of SPE's OnePetro website.
Automated image-processing algorithms can improve the quality and speed in classifying the morphology of heterogeneous carbonate rock. Several commercial products have produced petrophysical properties from 2D images and, to a lesser extent, from 3D images. Duri Field in Indonesia is the largest active steamflood project in the world. The field produces 73,000 BOPD, and 10,000 optimization jobs are executed annually to support base production. Fluid saturation isn't what it used to be when it comes to unconventional reservoirs.
This paper presents the basic concepts and architecture of the Eni Reservoir Electromagnetic Mapping borehole electromagnetic mapping system that integrates borehole EM methodology with surface EM methods to provide real-time mapping of reservoir-fluid distribution during production or injection. An intelligent drilling optimization application performs as an adaptive autodriller. In the Marcellus Shale, ROP improved 61% and 39% and drilling performance, measured as hours on bottom, improved 25%. With their gee-whiz—albeit artificial—intelligence, robots may be the industry’s answer to jobs deemed dangerous, dirty, distant, or dull. A test showing that it’s possible to automate the billing process for produced water hauling has opened the door for tracking a wide range of field activities.
