Africa (Sub-Sahara) ExxonMobil subsidiary Esso Exploration Angola has started oil production at the Kizomba Satellites Phase 2 project offshore Angola. The project involves the development of subsea infrastructure for the Kakocha, Bavuca, and Mondo South fields. Mondo South is the first field to begin production, and the other two satellite fields will follow later this year. The goal is to increase Block 15's production to 350,000 BOPD. Esso (40%) is the operator with BP Exploration Angola (26.67%), Kosmos Energy discovered gas at the Tortue West prospect in Block C-8 offshore Mauritania.
Africa (Sub-Sahara) Bowleven began drilling operations at its Zingana exploration well on the Bomono permit in Cameroon. Located 20 km northwest of Douala, Cameroon's largest city, the well will target a Paleocene (Tertiary) aged, three-way dip closed fault block. The company plans to drill the well to a depth of 2000 m and will then spud a second well in Moambe, 2 km east of Zingana. Bowleven is the operator and holds 100% interest in the license. Asia Pacific China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC) has brought its Dongfang 1-1 gas field Phase I adjustment project on line ahead of schedule. The field is located in the Yinggehai basin of the Beibu Gulf in the South China Sea and has an average water depth of 70 m. The field is currently producing 53 MMcf/D of gas and is expected to reach its peak production of 54 MMcf/D before the end of the year.
Eni started production from the Perla giant gas field located in the Gulf of Venezuela, 50 km offshore. Consisting of Mio-Oligocene carbonates with excellent characteristics, the reservoir is approximately 3000 m below sea level and lies at a water depth of 60 m. The best wells are estimated to produce more than 150 MMscf/D of gas each. The development plan includes 21 producing wells and four light offshore platforms linked by a 30-in. Two treatment trains have been installed at the facility, each capable of handling 150 Mscf/D and 300 Mscf/D of natural gas.

Moambe is the second well in a two-well program, approximately 2 km east of the first well, Zingana. It targets a previously undrilled Paleocene Tertiary three-way dip fault block containing multiple sands and will be drilled to an estimated 1620 m in measured depth. Both wells will be logged. Bowleven is the operator and holds 100% interest. Asia Pacific Murphy Oil discovered gas at its Permai exploration well in deepwater Block H in the South China Sea offshore Malaysia. The find is Murphy's eighth consecutive success in the area around the Rotan floating liquefied natural gas project, which is planned to begin its first production in 2018.
Africa (Sub-Sahara) Bowleven's Moambe exploration well on the Bomono Permit onshore Cameroon has encountered hydrocarbons. The well was drilled to a planned total depth of 5,803 ft and made its discovery in Paleocene-aged (Tertiary) target reservoir intervals. Moambe is the second in a two-well exploration program on the permit. The first well, Zingana, also discovered hydrocarbons. The Moambe well will be tested before further testing takes place at Zingana. Bowleven holds 100% interest in the permit. Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production has begun production at the Bonga Phase 3 project, an expansion of the deepwater Bonga project in Nigeria. Peak production from the expansion is expected to be 50,000 BOEPD, which will be shipped by pipelines to the Bonga floating production, storage, and offloading facility.

Africa (Sub-Sahara) Shell's new natural gas discoveries in Egypt are estimated in initial quantities at about 500 Bcf with more reserves possible, said Aidan Murphy, chairman and managing director of Shell Egypt. The discoveries, in a concession area of north Alam El-Shawish in the country's western desert, could yield 10% to 15% of the total production of Badr el-Din Petroleum Company, the 50/50 joint venture of Shell and Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation that is expected to manage the operations. Eni reported that the Laarich East-1 oil well in Tunisia has a delivery capacity of approximately 2,000 B/D. Spudded in June, the well discovered hydrocarbons in Silurian and Ordovician sandstones while reaching a final depth of 13,487 ft. The well has now been connected to production. The company continues to drill Tunisian exploration prospects that have been identified on 3D seismic surveys. Eni owns a 50% stake in the Makhrouga-Laarich-Debbech license, where the Laarich East-1 well is located.

In the complete paper, the authors revisit fundamental concepts of reservoir simulation in unconventional reservoirs and summarize several examples that form part of an archive of lessons learned. Proper lateral and vertical well spacing is critical for efficient development of unconventional reservoirs. Much research has focused on lateral well spacing but little on vertical spacing, which is challenging for stacked-bench plays such as the Permian Basin. Knowing which horizon crude oil flows from and in what proportions has been a major challenge for shale producers. Increasingly, they are turning to new technology to find the answer.
