Africa (Sub-Sahara) The drillship Ocean Rig Athena is preparing to drill appraisal and exploration wells offshore Senegal for a joint venture (JV) led by Cairn Energy. Two wells will appraise the SNE discovery, which was ranked by IHS CERA as the world's largest for oil last year. An exploration well will also be drilled in the Bellatrix prospect, for which mapping has indicated a potential 168 million bbl of oil resources. Cairn holds a 40% interest in the JV, with remaining interests held by ConocoPhillips (35%), FAR (15%), and Petrosen (10%). The Ksiri West-A exploration well drilled by Circle Oil on the Sebou permit onshore Morocco has flowed gas at a rate of 8 MMcf/D following tests. It is being readied for production.
Africa (Sub-Sahara) Marathon Oil has produced first gas from its Alba B3 compression platform offshore Equatorial Guinea. The startup enables the company to convert approximately 130 million BOE of proved undeveloped reserves, which more than doubles its remaining proved developed reserve base in the country. Marathon holds an operating interest of about 65% in the field, with Noble Energy holding the remaining stake. Aminex said that gas production from the Kiliwani North-1 well in Tanzania has reached 30 MMcf/D (about 5,000 BOE/D). The project's commissioning process is expected to conclude with a well test to determine the optimal production rate, which previous test data suggest will be approximately 30 MMcf/D, the company said. The operator of the Kiliwani North Development License, Aminex holds a 54.575% interest in the well. Asia Pacific Beach Energy produced first gas from the Udacha field in Production Retention License 26 of the Cooper Basin in South Australia.
Africa (Sub-Sahara) San Leon Energy reported encouraging performance from its OML 18 field in Nigeria. Reperforation of an oil well increased gross field production to approximately 61,000 B/D before output was temporarily scaled back to 53,000 B/D for a shut-in, upgrade, and workover of the well. A number of other field wells will be reperforated in coming months, the company said. San Leon holds a 9.72% interest in the field, which is operated by Eroton (35%). Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. holds the remaining stake. FAR said that drilling has begun on the SNE-5 appraisal well offshore Senegal. The well and the following SNE-6 well will evaluate the upper SNE reservoir units' connectivity and deliverability by oil flow testing that will include interference tests.
Shell has given the green light to develop its Kaikias deepwater field in the United States Gulf of Mexico, the first such project the company has approved since Appomattox in July 2015. Located 130 miles offshore Louisiana, Kaikias is to start production in 2019 and expected to be profitable at oil prices lower than USD 40/bbl as a result of a simplified design that allowed costs to be slashed by 50%. The Shell-operated project will be tied into the company's nearby Ursa production hub. Kaikias is estimated to contain more than 100 million BOE of recoverable resources and in its three-well first phase is anticipated to produce a peak 40,000 BOE/D. Shell holds an 80% interest in the project with the remaining interest held by Mitsui.
Chevron reported a "major" oil discovery at the deepwater Ballymore prospect offshore the United States Gulf of Mexico. The Ballymore well reached a total measured depth of 29,194 ft and encountered more than 670 ft of net oil pay with "excellent" reservoir and fluid characteristics, the company said. A sidetrack well was being drilled to assess the discovery, which has already been deemed commercially viable. Located approximately 3 miles from Chevron's Blind Faith platform, the company-operated prospect is situated in about 6,540 ft of water, approximately 75 miles off the Louisiana coast, and covers four blocks in the Norphlet play. Chevron has a 60% working interest in the prospect with Total holding the remaining stake.
Africa (Sub-Sahara) Equatorial Guinea's Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons has notified Ophir Energy that it will not gain an extension for the offshore Block R license. Targeted production was approximately 330 MMcf/D, with a plateau of 30 years. Located approximately 140 km west of Bioko Island, the Fortuna project was to see development of six commercial discoveries in a phased manner. In November 2016, the British oil and gas company created a joint operating company with OneLNG to develop the floating LNG project at the Fortuna gas discovery. Asia Pacific Thailand's Department of Mineral Fuels (DMF) has awarded state oil company PTTEP production-sharing contracts for both the offshore G1/61 (Erawan) and G2/61 (Bongkot) projects.
Africa (Sub-Sahara) Eni discovered up to 250 million bbl of light oil in the Ndungu exploration prospect in Block 15/06 offshore Angola. A well in 1076 m of water reached TD of 4050 m and proved a single oil column of approximately 65 m with 45 m of net pay of 35 API oil. Well results indicate production capacity in excess of 10,000 B/D. Eni operates Block 15/06 with 36.8421% Joint venture partners are Sonangol P&P (36.8421%) and SSI Fifteen (26.3158%). Eni discovered gas and condensate on the Akoma prospect in CTP-Block 4 offshore Ghana. The Akoma-1X exploration well was drilled in 350 m of water approximately 50 km offshore and 12 km northwest of the FPSO John Agyekum Kufuor. Eni estimated volume between 550 and 650 Bcf of gas and 18–20 million bbl of condensate.
Shell's CEO said the Dutch supermajor has "too many layers" and that the move to downsize will help ensure its future. As a result, at least 9,000 people are expected to leave the oil and gas producer between now and 2022. The Dutch major said it has filed an application for drilling operations in the North Slope as part of an effort to help attract buyers to 18 leases it purchased rights to in 2012. A new open innovation studio aims to use crowdsourcing to redefine the future of oil and gas exploration. The acquisition and divesture deal includes large-interest positions in nine offshore exploration blocks, several of which Shell may become the operator of.
When people hear of surfactant research in the oil and gas industry, they most likely think of surfactant flooding. An emerging area of surfactant application in the industry is as a conformance improvement agent. Digitalization is going to impact every industry in the next 5–10 years. The oil and gas industry needs a lot more data scientists today than a year ago, so a person with the right qualifications and experience is the need of the industry today.
