In this SPE Tech Talk, Coby Reynolds, Director of Water Treatment for TETRA Technologies, discusses how produced water is being managed by different E&Ps and midstream companies and how it will impact the market in coming years. Additionally, Reynolds will delve into strategic water usage, mobility, and treatment variability options as well as how seismicity has changed the recycling landscape.

The presentation reviews the results of taking three 40/70 mesh proppants commonly used for multi-stage horizontal well slickwater completions in North America and testing them at 0.5 lb/ft2 over 1000 hours of "extended time" at stress and temperature conditions representative of the Bakken formation of North Dakota. The results presented give a clear insight into the degree of damage occurring in the reservoir due to time at stress and temperature.

To start the process of digital transformation in the oil production operations carried out in the Ecuadorian Oriente Basin, the methodology proposed was based on "MIT Sloan School of Management" and established for all the processes of innovation and product creation, called RWW, "Real, Win and Worth". Real case studies in Ecuador will be discussed including not only production engineering analysis but also production operations in the field with a major focus on asset surveillance. Both activities require time-consuming tasks such as field trips and well-by-well analysis, showing the transformation in the way we operate leveraging the use of data, promoting remote operations, and automating the workflows used within the production engineering department. The starting point of this implementation was the well surveillance workflow, carried out at the field level because there was no mature SCADA system. Thus, the Edge was implemented with capabilities based on Internet of Things (IoT) technology to connect the different elements of the production chain. Currently, more than 400 pieces of equipment have been connected to a unified platform, including electro-submersible pumping equipment (ESP), wells with Beam Pumping (BM), injector wells, injection pumps, high-pressure injection equipment, multiphase flow meters and others, which allowed to the mature field to integrate data, perform real-time analysis and remotely control any equipment that is connected.

ABSTRACT Microseismic event locations and moment tensors (MT) in underground mines can provide insights into the subsurface deformation and current state of stress. However, reliable estimation of these source parameters is rather challenging due to high-frequency waveforms and a low signal-to-noise ratio for negative magnitude events. We study microseismicity in an underground potash mine in Saskatchewan, Canada, recorded between 1 March and 30 June 2021, by a network of broadband seismometers. The active mining is carried out in low-velocity evaporites at depths of approximately 1 km below the ground level. The theoretical dispersion curves show that guided waves in the form of leaky P and P-SV/SH normal modes can exist in a 1D velocity model representing mine geology. These guided waves are detected as high-energy dispersive arrivals on the seismograms recorded at the underground receivers. We locate the events using the arrival times of the guided waves and their mean group velocities. Most (approximately 80%) of the detected events cluster around the mine layout between depths of 0.95 to 1.05 km. Next, we compute MT for 92 events using waveforms of guided phases. The MT show nondouble-couple components with only 28 events having double-couple percentages greater than 50%. These events occur near mined-out cavities with source mechanisms corresponding to the layer delamination in the roof and floor or pillar yield related to the closure of cavities. No abnormal microseismicity is detected away from the mine levels in the more competent carbonate rocks above or below the evaporite formations. Thus, guided waves enable the detection of microseismic events up to large distances and can provide high-resolution event locations and MT inversion. These can be interpreted in the context of local geology and mining activities to identify the dominant factors affecting microseismicity.

The industry is now in its second year beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, and the workforce has changed in many ways, but issues facing production performance remain. Major conferences saw 116 submissions from 28 countries, with 64% regarding electrical submersible pumps (ESPs), and 18% and 8% devoted to gas lift and rod lift, respectively. Many of the papers dealt with case history successes. That is all well and good, but it doesn't necessarily drive reader interest if it can't be applied to their asset. The top three papers were selected on the guidelines of clarity of the abstract in addressing the scope, methods/procedures/process, results/observations/conclusions, and novel or additive information.

Seventeen companies have been offered a total of 24 licenses in the second round of the North Sea Transition Authority's (NSTA) 33rd oil and gas licensing round. Of the 17 companies, several supermajors including Equinor, BP, Shell, and TotalEnergies secured licenses for 74 blocks and part-blocks in the Central North Sea, Northern North Sea, and West of Shetland areas. Remaining blocks in the Southern North Sea and East Irish Sea will be offered when environmental evaluations are finalized by the UK Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning. These awards follow the 27 licenses offered in the first allocation made in October 2023 which consisted of 931 blocks and part-blocks available in the same locations. The application window closed in January 2023 with 115 bids coming in from 76 companies.

Intervention-based fiber optics have proved a valuable and cost-effective tool in understanding during-fracturing and post-flowback well and section performance. During-fracturing diagnostics, such as crosswell strain measurements from an offset monitor well, describe where fractures intersect the monitor well and reveal details such as azimuth, fracture-propagation velocity, and activation and reactivation statistics. These critical data points help inform cluster, stage, and well-spacing decision-making.

The Nova field is in the northeastern North Sea. Reservoir sands are at depths of 2500–2800 m, with a pressure of approximately 290 bar and temperatures up to 110 C. The field will be operated with six wells--three oil producers and three water injectors--with an injector/producer pair in each of the main fault compartments.

The complete paper investigates the relevance of wind and solar energy for the supply of artificial lift systems on offshore platforms in the Brazilian equatorial region. The scope of the authors' study encompassed a detailed technical and environmental assessment, with an emphasis on the integration of a 10-MW floating solar photovoltaic (FSPV) power system to meet demand for 10 pumps. The results obtained highlight the high viability of the system in meeting the demand of these pumps and ensuring an adequate and sustainable energy supply. The equatorial margin is an area in northern Brazil covering part of the sedimentary basins of the equatorial Atlantic. The region is home to important sedimentary basins such as the Amazon Basin, the Pará-Maranhão Basin, the Barreirinhas Basin, the Potiguar Basin, and the Ceará Basin, all known for their hydrocarbon reserves.
