The Department of the Interior has announced a proposal for a second offshore wind energy auction in the Gulf of Mexico. The proposed lease sale includes four areas offshore Louisiana and Texas totaling 410,060 acres, which the department says have the potential to power 1.2 million homes. "Today's announcement is another step forward in the Biden/Harris administration's pursuit of building a clean energy future and permitting 30 GW of offshore wind energy capacity by 2030," said Interior Secretary Deb Haaland. "We are taking action to jumpstart America's offshore wind industry and using American innovation to deliver reliable, affordable power to homes and businesses, while also addressing the climate crisis." Since the beginning of the Biden/Harris administration, Interior has approved the nation's first six commercial scale offshore wind projects, held three offshore wind lease auctions--including offshore New York and offshore in the Pacific and Gulf Coasts--initiated environmental review of 12 offshore wind projects, and advanced the process to access and establish additional Wind Energy Areas in Oregon, the Gulf of Maine, and the Central Atlantic.

Saleh A. Al-Dossary began his work at Saudi Aramco in the Dhahran Geophysical Research Group, contributing to edge-preserving and smoothing developments. He now works in the Exploration Application Services Department developing new seismic processing and attributes algorithms. Al-Dossary received his B.S. degree in Computer Science with a minor in geophysics from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Socorro, NM. He received his M.S. degree from Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA, and he received his Ph.D. from the University of Houston, Houston, TX, both in Geophysics. Al-Dossary holds seven patents and is an applicant for five additional patents in seismic edge-preserving and detection technology.

The European Parliament recently approved the Artificial Intelligence Act that ensures safety and compliance with fundamental rights while boosting innovation. The regulation, agreed in negotiations with member states in December 2023, was endorsed by members of the European Parliament (MEPs) with 523 votes in favor, 46 against, and 49 abstentions. The regulation aims to protect fundamental rights, democracy, the rule of law, and environmental sustainability from high-risk artificial intelligence (AI), while boosting innovation and establishing Europe as a leader in the field. The regulation establishes obligations for AI based on its potential risks and level of impact. "We finally have the world's first binding law on artificial intelligence, to reduce risks, create opportunities, combat discrimination, and bring transparency," said Italian MEP Brando Benifei.

You are invited to submit an abstract to the Summit on Geophysical Detection of Explosive Remnants of War (ERW): Solving Current Challenges of Unexploded Ordnance and Demining. The virtual event will feature a technical program showcasing the latest in geophysical surveying and data processing for surveys performed on land, in water, and from the air. Besides former military training sites, the summit will address the interest that industry and governments are seeing in parts of the globe where kinetic engagements have been or are currently being fought. The event brings together researchers, industry professionals, and students to share and discuss recent advancements, challenges, and applications of geophysics for solving today's detection, characterization, and removal of ERW.

Sixteen college student teams in the US will receive 1.2 million in funding from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to research and develop innovative solutions that address environmental and public health challenges. The funding is part of the EPA's People, Prosperity, and the Planet (P3) Program, launched 20 years ago with the goal of designing environmental solutions that move the country toward a sustainable future. Each program will receive a 75,000 grant to fund the project over 2 years. Of the 16 recipients, six are focused on environmental solutions. "EPA is pleased to mark the 20th anniversary of our P3 program by announcing this impressive round of projects that are tackling critical issues such as removing PFAS from water, combating harmful algal blooms, and materials recovery and reuse," said Chris Frey, assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Research and Development.

Born into a lineage of innovation through his mother's family, Howard Hughes Jr. traced his ancestry to Catherine of Valois, Dowager Queen of England, and her second husband Owen Tudor. His father, Howard Hughes Sr., revolutionized oil drilling with the invention of the tri-cone roller bit, co-founded the Sharp-Hughes Tool Company in 1909 with his business partner, and amassed wealth for the family. Despite his affluent upbringing, Hughes Jr. displayed early mechanical prowess, building a motorbike from scratch at the age of twelve, making headlines as the first and only kid in Houston with such a creation. Although his parents did not live to witness his accomplishments, Hughes Jr. inherited 75% of his father's multi-million dollar shares, fueled by oil drilling royalties. Following his father's passing, he lost interest in academics and left Rice University at 19 after marrying Ella Rice.

In recent years, with continuous improvements in ultra-deep oil and gas exploration theory and technology, domestic onshore ultra-deep oil and gas exploration has continued to make breakthroughs, providing an important replacement field for CNPC's upstream business development and large-scale increase of reserves and production. The proven oil and gas reserves in ultra-deep reservoirs in Tarim Basin account for more than 50% of the proven oil and gas in ultra-deep reservoirs in China, and Tarim has become the main field for onshore ultra-deep exploration in China. This is not only due to the innovation of ultra-deep oil and gas geological theory, but also due to the breakthrough of ultra-deep geophysical technology. Tarim ultra deep oil and gas exploration faces many challenges: accurate imaging of steeply ultra-deep structures in complex mountains; better recovery of weak signals; enhanced imaging resolution in the ultra-deep subsalt of large desert areas; ultra-deep imaging in thick loess covered areas and other problems restricts the process and economic development of ultra-deep oil and gas exploration in basin. Therefore, there is an urgent need to study theoretical technologies suitable for ultra-deep geophysical acquisition, weak signal processing and imaging, as well as ultra-deep reservoir prediction and fluid identification under different geological conditions.
