Conditions--Workplace conditions are managed effectively through a continuous proactive effort to identify and mitigate identified hazards and risks. Compliance--Local, federal, and company workplace safety requirements are regularly reviewed and audited to assure adherence. Capital--Money and other resources, including personnel, are appropriately allocated for oversight and improvement, allowing the organization to strategically and tactically invest in continuous improvement. Culture--There is cultural capacity to support and reinforce the health, environment, and safety (HSE) systems. The desired beliefs, behaviors, and experiences exist, and the shared mindset is that continuous improvement will always be possible.
Pieridae Energy has reconfirmed its expectations to sell its abandoned Goldboro LNG project prior to the end of June 2024. Proceeds will be used to partially repay its 22 million convertible bridge term loan which matures on 13 December 2024. The Canadian independent said last November that it was walking away from the project, which it had been pursing since 2012. Once the sale is completed, it will mark the conclusion of Pieridae's pivot away from east coast LNG and toward an Alberta-focused natural gas production and processing business. "Our intent to divest our LNG business was previously communicated, and we advanced the planned sale of the Goldboro Nova Scotia LNG assets in the fourth quarter of 2023," company President and Chief Executive Darcy Reding told investors this month.
The Department of the Interior has announced a proposal for a second offshore wind energy auction in the Gulf of Mexico. The proposed lease sale includes four areas offshore Louisiana and Texas totaling 410,060 acres, which the department says have the potential to power 1.2 million homes. "Today's announcement is another step forward in the Biden/Harris administration's pursuit of building a clean energy future and permitting 30 GW of offshore wind energy capacity by 2030," said Interior Secretary Deb Haaland. "We are taking action to jumpstart America's offshore wind industry and using American innovation to deliver reliable, affordable power to homes and businesses, while also addressing the climate crisis." Since the beginning of the Biden/Harris administration, Interior has approved the nation's first six commercial scale offshore wind projects, held three offshore wind lease auctions--including offshore New York and offshore in the Pacific and Gulf Coasts--initiated environmental review of 12 offshore wind projects, and advanced the process to access and establish additional Wind Energy Areas in Oregon, the Gulf of Maine, and the Central Atlantic.

Ipieca, the global oil and gas association for advancing environmental and social performance across the energy transition, is marking its 50th anniversary. It was established in 1974 at the request of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to act as the engagement channel between UNEP and the oil and gas industry on environmental and climate issues. In the 5 decades that have followed, the non-lobby association's scope has expanded to cover social performance and mainstreaming sustainability, and it now works with a wide range of UN bodies across its strategic pillars of climate, nature, people, and sustainability. The association brings experts from its member companies together with its partners in UN, non-governmental organizations, and academic organizations to share knowledge and develop good practice guidance. To date it has published over 300 good-practice guidance to advance climate action, environmental responsibility, social performance, and sustainability.

Ipieca, the oil and gas association for advancing environmental and social performance, and the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) have updated their guidance for assessing medical facilities. Oil and gas operations frequently need to rely on existing medical facilities in their area of operations. The assessment of these facilities capabilities is an essential step in the preparation of medical emergency response plans. To assist health professionals in this process, Ipieca's Health Committee has updated Report 588--Medical Facilities Assessment to ensure it is up to date with current practices. The report serves as a checklist for medical professionals to assess local health facilities by guiding them through key elements that should be considered.

Daniel Merino-Garcia, Project InnerSpace, moved from the oil and gas industry into the geothermal energy sector in 2023 after 20 years working for European oil and gas companies in research and technology development in the areas of production engineering, flow assurance, and fluid characterization. He has authored or coauthored more than 40 technical articles. Merino-Garcia holds a graduate degree in chemical engineering from Valladolid University (Spain) and a doctorate in petroleum engineering from the Technical University of Denmark.
Taylor Mattie, director of technology transfer and deployment, Project InnerSpace, has 8 years of experience in the energy industry. He previously worked as director of geothermal strategy and growth at Baker Hughes. Mattie is obsessed with geothermal energy and figuring out ways to scale its potential to global availability, which has led to articles in various publications. He holds a BS in petroleum and natural gas engineering from Penn State University and a master of energy from the University of Auckland.

Justus Ngerebara is lead well engineer, CWI-deepwater, overseeing completions, front-end design, operations, and technology maturation/deployment in Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Ltd. (SNEPCo). A graduate of mechanical and petroleum engineering, he has worked across the spectrum of drilling and completion engineering and operation as a drilling supervisor, and as a well intervention, completion, and performance improvement engineer on land, swamp, and offshore environments. Ngerebara has authored several SPE technical papers and journal articles. He has championed the deployment of several technologies such as remotely operated completion systems, wash-pipe jetting tool technology, and check-valve screens for SNEPCo.
He has 40 years' experience in upstream oil and gas, geothermal energy, power generation, and district heating. He co-founded Oilfield International, an energy consultancy; served on the boards of UK, Thailand, and Cyprus energy companies, controlling 1.2 billion bbl of oil reserves; and led a legislative team drafting regulatory and tariff frameworks for district heating and central heating plants for central and eastern Europe countries. Lines authored Chapter 7 of "The Future of Geothermal in Texas," The University of Texas at Austin, January 2023, and on behalf of SPE collaborated on the winning Project InnerSpace/SPE/Geothermal Rising tender submission for the 165 million US Department of Energy GEODE grant, "Geothermal Energy from Oil and Gas Demonstrated Engineering."
