The Oil and Natural Gas Technology Symposium: Focus on Sustainability, held virtually on 6–7 April 2021, created an opportunity for open dialog between the oil and gas industry and policymakers. The first session leads with a sustainability panel and provides tangible real-world examples/case studies of environmental stewardship occurring in the oil and natural gas industry.

The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative is a CEO-led consortium that aims to accelerate the industry response to climate change. OGCI member companies explicitly support the Paris Agreement and its goals. As leaders in the industry, accounting for over 30% of global operated oil and gas production, we aim to leverage our collective strength and expand the pace and scope of our transitions to a low-carbon future, so helping to achieve net zero emissions as early as possible. Our members collectively invest around $7B each year in low carbon solutions. OGCI Climate Investments, our $1B fund, invests in solutions to decarbonize sectors like oil and gas, industrials and commercial transport.

Timing and Substance Are Key for Net-Zero Supply Chain

The reduction of carbon through the energy value chain is essential to meeting net-zero ambitions but requires long-term visibility--and early commitment--from across traditional and emerging industries as well as from governments. This is particularly true of the experience and expertise found in the oil and gas supply chain, where engineering, design, manufacturing, and service must work in tandem with the ongoing energy transition. Supply-chain investments are, after all, significantly influenced by the speed at which new projects are constructed; how these developments compare with rival opportunities will determine the size and location of critical support elements. And timing is as important as substance for the supply chain, where continued promises of progress tomorrow must finally make way for accelerated, definitive time frames for the development, construction, and operation of a fully decarbonized energy sector. Energy technology company Baker Hughes is among those which have committed to reaching net zero by 2050.

This SPE Live focuses on stimulation practices used in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The experts also discuss the potential proppant over-displacement in horizontal well fracturing in conventional tight reservoirs, the biggest challenges for speeding up stimulation of offshore wells, and recent activity in stimulation in the region. "What are your daily limits and limitations at home, at your workplace and on the way between?" With this leading question, Alison Isherwood (SPE London Section, Net Zero Committee) and Joschka Röth (SPE German Section, Gaia Regional Liaison for Europe) started their Gaia Workshop at the Novotel Budapest Danube Hotel in Budapest (Hungary) on 25th September 2021. The ultimate aim of the workshop: participants should be able to communicate confidently with everyone about sustainability and planetary limits.
