PetroBowl Regional Qualifiers

Organization of the PetroBowl Regional Qualifiers are planned collaboratively with SPE International and the Regional Directors who operate within each PetroBowl Super Region. Each region will select up to five teams to represent them at the PetroBowl Championship. In addition to the teams from each region, the first and second place Chapters from the previous year's Championship are also invited to defend their title. A total of 32 places are available for the Championship. While COVID-19 remains a serious health and safety concern, Regional Qualifiers will be a mix of physical and virtual events depending on suitability for the region.

Dr. Edwards has extensive experience in the oil and gas exploration and production industry worldwide. He holds a BA degree from Keele University in Geology and Chemistry, and a Doctorate in Petrology from the University of Manchester. He had a 17 year career with BP that spanned from R&D through to front line operations and project management. Tony was a founder member of BP's Integrated Operations Program, Field of the Future, and was subsequently the global director for the Advanced Collaborative Environment Program. In 2006 he moved to BG-Group to launch its digital oilfield program and three years later, in January 2009 he founded Stepchange Global, a dedicated digital oilfield advisory company.

Dr. Lee holds BS, MS and PhD degrees in chemical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Early in his career, John worked for ExxonMobil and specialized in integrated reservoir studies. He later joined the Petroleum Engineering faculty at Texas A&M, and became Regents Professor of Petroleum Engineering. While at A&M, he also served as a consultant with S.A. Holditch & Associates, where he specialized in reservoir engineering aspects of unconventional gas resources. Professor Lee joined the University of Houston faculty in September 2011 and held the Cullen Distinguished University Chair until September 2015, when he rejoined the Texas A&M Faculty.

At Xecta Digital Labs, he leads an engineering team in the development of digital solutions for energy industry by fusing physics and data analytics methods for applications in reservoir, production, facilities, and downstream processes. Sathish is a member of Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and served in several roles including advisory positions, chairperson and committee member in industry initiatives, and authored industry reports on applications of data analytics in reservoir engineering. The course focuses on challenges and issues of proper isolation in wells with specific interest in finding weaknesses in well construction prior to creating problems during perforating, acidizing, fracturing or other high pressure operations. Case histories are used to illustrate warning "flags" of well damage or weaknesses created by such factors as corrosion, erosion, explosive stress loads, packer setting, drilling wear, differential pressure, various chemical attacks, thermal effects, cement failure and other conditions. Problem avoidance will be emphasized. Identification of main well failure problems with cause and typical extent of problems Warning "flags" common to most damage causes Workable and non-workable repair approaches Pressure test types, extent and what they do and do not identify Monitoring methods for stimulations Ability to identify wells that may not be candidates for well stimulation or restimulation can prevent both economic and especially environmental problems. These problems are often evident by quick screening, even by non-specialists.

Learn to frame and evaluate a wide variety of day-to-day energy industry value-of-information (VOI) problems, specifically in unconventional resources. Attendees will be introduced to a step-wise approach to value information in resource plays and will work a few commonly encountered unconventional resource play information decision problems. Decisions around pre-frac data and valuing seismic at the program level for detecting sweet spots and high grading drilling locations and drilling order will be worked in multi-discipline breakouts. These will be interspersed with lectures and discussions. An overview of spacing pilot design framing and evaluation will also be covered. Using VOI workflow software (DTrio) to guide the evaluation and the reference cases provided, attendees will learn how VOI decisions are set up and evaluated, sensitivities are performed on key input variables, and insight is gained to determine if and when new information can add value. Develop an understanding of the VOI workflow and its practical application Understand how VOI is an important aspect of asset management and decision analysis Learn how to frame and value information which may change "go/no go" asset decisions, and be introduced to how VOI affects "how to go" or optimization asset decisions Learn how to evaluate acquiring information in unconventional resource plays
