SUMMARY: During the construction of the Santander-Torrelavega Highway, PK 1+350 to 1+510, the main carriageway cut the base of an ancient landslide. Excavation of the cut in September 1987 revived the movements which had ocurred in earlies times, with features which, although not absolutely unprecedented, do have unusual aspects, from which interesting lesson can be learnt regarding the start, development and final balance of the landslide. Progressive failure and viscous creep are subjects related with problems normally found in the stability of slopes, on which some comments are made in this paper.
1. GEOLOGY AND GEOMETRY OF THE LANDSLIDE The area of the ancient landslide has a gentle slope, under 15·, although the adjoining hills are somewhat steeper. Two small valley lines surround the area, which was reckoned to have been affected by the -- landslide. The present landslide overlapped these - valley lines laterally, as shown in Fig. 1, which reproduces the plan view of the landslide: this is clearly limited in its upper part by the classic -- tension cracks, and in its lower part and sides by the clear relative displacement between the moving mass and the rest of the rock mass. The plan view is pear-shaped, with maximum dimensions of 250m. × 150m. We shall limit ourselves to saying that the rock mass is composed by lutite and sandstone weald strata; the first are brown or reddish in colour and the second - are lighter, almost yellowish. In any case, the clay content is marked. The plasticity Index of the clay traction is between 15–20% and the Liquid Limit between 30 and 40%.
