Orientation and Career Development for New Engineers
Talabani, Soran A. (Baker Hughes E&P Solutions)
Abstract Training new engineers for any industry is not an easy task.It is also the most important task for the company to invest effort and money in, because the new engineers today will be the managers of the future. Incapable engineers with insufficient backgrounds in training will therefore lead the company to make disastrous mistakes in planning and management. Consequently, it is important to put serious efforts into training new engineers by appointing either the right training staff within the company, or the right company responsible for managing the training plans in detail. Training plans should be reviewed by both sides. The company "that the engineer belongs to" should identify the right position for the engineer in the company. This is not a one-sided decision and should rather be made by involving the engineer. The engineer should have a taste of the position and enjoy doing the work. The company, on the other hand, should ensure that the position suits the engineer. Knowledge of the company's heritage by the employees is as important as their tasks.Knowing the company's structure helps an employee recognize their position within the company. A new employee should be advised that their education should start from day one in the company by keeping up to date with the latest research and studies conducted all over the world. In this paper, a detailed plan for training new engineers, phases a company should follow for training, what supervisors should be looking for, and how to periodically improve training programmess are addressed. Introduction Why do we need to train new engineers? Any firm should make sure that the new employee understands his/her job in the company. The new employee should have a commitment and devotion to their job. However, when the new engineer first joins a company he/she will not know how the system works and how tasks can be delivered. It is important that the new engineer understands the brand name of the company, the company's structure and its history. Knowledge of the company's heritage by the employees is as important as their tasks.Knowing the company's structure helps in knowing one's position within the company. Employees have no understanding on day one about any issue they may have to deal with during their work. Therefore, it is difficult for them to match their knowledge with practice unless the company intervenes and helps them to do so.Employees should be advised that theory is not always true and correct and they should do practical work on a daily basis to build up their experience. Experience never comes by adding years of service without hard work.In fact, an engineer who works hard, does practical work and builds up their culture in the space of one year may match or even exceed another engineer who is able to count ten years of service without practicing in the same way. A new employee should be advised that education starts since day one in the company by keeping up to date with the latest research and studies being conducted all over the world.Engineers should understand the new research and be able to deploy these new ideas and question them by contacting authors. Research centers and companies spend a huge amount of effort and money in conducting and proving those new theories. Engineers should understand them before any deployment.By doing so, the new engineer may come up with new ideas for local application.

Abstract Well bore images become increasingly important in identifying formation features and their possible extent. There are two different tools that acquire image data, acoustic and micro-resistivity.Both tools faced difficulties and challenges in acquiring quality data over the deviated and horizontal section of a well. To perform quality image data in deviated and horizontal section of a well is difficult because of; firstly, drilling rogues, deviated and horizontal section, and these results in poor pad-wall contacts. Therefore, the quality of the resistivity image data is highly affected by the drilling fluid, along with the acoustic data.Secondly, poor mud properties that behaves as a blocking medium to acquire quality data. A new technique requires modifying in both drilling and mud properties has been applied in different fields with high success. This new technique requires certain bottom hole assembly and drilling parameters, along with drilling fluid properties to better drill smooth holes. The new technique resulted in smooth horizontal section and better in the deviated section, therefore, better pad-wall contact.Images from both; resitivity and acoustic modes provided high quality data acquisition. As a result, geological features were very clear by the image logs after the implementation of this new technique. In this paper, the new technique is explained along with case histories from three different fields of the image logs are presented and compared to previous poor quality logs. Introduction Image logs are very crucial for the identification of geological features of the reservoir rocks. All image features will be used for reservoir and geological setting and many other related studies. The traditional image log tools are either acoustic or micro-resistivity.The acoustic mode consists of the rotar motor which combine both; the transmitter and the receiver. The motor rotates and sends signals to the formation, while the receiver measure the sound reflection (amplitude and travel time).Acoustic mode is affected by the bore hole rogusity, shape, and the tool centralization.Acousticimages display geological features from the wellbore wall with the minimum depth of penetration.Smooth bore hole shape and thin mud cake, in general, results in good acoustic image data. The second mode is the micro-resistivity.The micro-resistivity mode consists of pads that carry resistivity sensors (4–8).The depth of investigation is around 1 – 2 inches. Therefore, most of the geological features/artifacts could be identified. The micro-resistivity mode depends on the resistivity contrasts between the matrix and the fluids in the pore space. It is therefore, affected by the fluid invasion into the formation and type of the original fluid. Therefore, under certain conditions it can be utilized to identify formation fluid contacts. Certain geological features responds differently to both measurements such as halo-effects, hydrocarbon effects, and woodgrain effects. It is, therefore, recommended to acquire both measurements. In general, the image tool is heavy and is not easy to centralize over the deviated and horizontal sections.Once it is centralized perfectly, it will be affected by the hole roguesity or spiralization. The hole roguesity and spiralization are resulted from the use of the wrong bottom hole assembly (BHA) including the bit.
