There is a set of settled ideas in the field of the mechanics of rock mass joints, that need a deep revision, after the last experimental works of several authors. In this paper, this theme is approached under several viewpoints, like the following ones: the essential influence of the mating or mismatching of rock joints on their strength (different strength models are applicable to these two situations, one leading preferably to normal scale effects, and the other to inverse scale effects); Patton's model is a bad formulation of the joint strength, whenever there is a dilation effect in the slidings (actually, the essential consideration of the amplitude of the roughess isn't made by any limit equilibrium model, like Patton's model); the joint strength increases as the width perpendicular to the sliding direction is reduced (previous works of other authors suggested the independence of the strength on that width); the reduction of the anisotropy of the roughness, as the sample symmetry and sample dimensions increase; there is no scale effect in the discontinuity mechanics, if there is no roughness heterogeneity; when only the same roughness and undulation orders are involved in the tests.
Introduction From the pioneering experimental works of Patton (1966) on the mechanics of rock mass joints, it is clear that his ideas were essentially incorporated in all the models about the matter which have appeared since, including much cited ones like those of Barton (Barton and Choubey, 1977) and Ladanyi and Archambault (Saeb,1990). However, the problem is far from a satisfactory solution, especially when the scale effects are considered.
We demonstrate in this paper that there is a set of settled ideas in the field of the mechanics of rock mass joints that need a deep revision following some of the last experimental works, such as that on artificial discontinuities in porphyritic granite (Leal-Gomes, 1998) and those on moulded discontinuities in mortar (Onishi et al, 1993; Leal- Gomes, 2001).
The essential significance of mating or mismatching of rock mass joints The experimental works of Kutter and Otto (1990) on mated and mismatched samples suggested that the scale effect on strength discontinuities was inverse (exhibiting increasing values of strength which tend towards an asymptotic value as sample dimensions increase) since the samples were well mated and that the scale effect was normal.
