Abstract It is well known in underground mining and waste disposal that the development of excavation damaged zones (EDZ), and thus, hydraulic pathways, is closely related to the excess in the corresponding damage boundary (= long-term strength) of the rock mass and the resulting damage. By integrating short-term and long-term strength, dilatancy, damage and healing into the newly extended Hou/Lux constitutive model for rock salt, it is possible to treat the tertiary creep, to identify the EDZ around underground facilities and to predict the time-dependent development of the EDZ in rock salt. Under in-situ conditions, the EDZ of a 37-year-old drift at the Sondershausen salt mine and the EDZ around a drift dam in rock salt are numerically examined. The numerical analysis gives satisfactory results. Introduction Rock salt is one of several possible host rocks for the permanent disposal of radioactive waste. The object of this disposal is to isolate radioactive and other toxic particles from the biosphere. Therefore geo-technical barriers must be constructed for sealing drifts and shafts in underground repositories. EDZ with increased permeability constitute a potential risk to the functionality and to the effectiveness of the geo-technical barriers. The identification and forecasting of the temporal development, as well as the mechanical and hydraulic characteristics of the EDZ are the basis for the assessment of the safety of the geo-technical barriers and for the description of the hydromechanical interaction in the EDZ. First of all, it must be stated that EDZ can be identified by various means of measurements or calculations. Certain methods of measurement, such as permeability measurements and ultrasonic measurements are indispensable; however, they cannot effectively be used for predicting any future developments. This is only possible with the use of a constitutive model.
The split-lining structure was newly developed for the air-tight lining of the underground compressed air storage cavern. This structure consists of separated reinforced concrete (RC) segments and air-tight membrane._ It is most important for the Compressed Air Energy Storage Gas Turbine (CAES-G/T) system to develop the economical lining. In order to verify the applicability of split-lining structure, CAES-G/T pilot plant was constructed and operated for 6 months. We confirmed the practical usefulness and safety of this system through the operation. This paper presents the mechanical behaviour of surrounding rock mass and the lining structure observed through the operation of CAES-G/T pilot plant. Introduction In recent years, the use of underground has been advanced in various fields. A proof test was developed in Japan to use the underground cavern as a compressed air storage facility. To prove the practical use and the safety of the CAES-G/T power generation system1), this test was executed in the underground compressed air storage cavern, which was constructed in the depth of 450m from the ground surface. In order to store the high-pressured air, both pressure resistance and air-tightness are required. However, it might cost a great deal to make mass storing facilities with a metallic material such as steel lining. Then, to construct the storage facilities economically, we developed a new airtight lining structure. This structure ensures the pressure resistance to bear whole internal pressures to the surrounding rock mass and the air-tightness to have expansion and contraction in consideration of the rock properties of our country where a lot of cracks existed. Newly Developed Structure The main technological problem of the underground compressed air storage cavern.
Abstract Short-term strength, damage and healing boundaries for rock salt are experimentally determined and integrated into the Hou/Lux-MDS damage-healing model. This model can be used to describe the mechanical behaviour of rock salt during a damaging process (under high stress to strength ratios) as well as during a healing process (under very low stress to strength ratios with high confining pressure). The development of the damage and the stress to strength ratio in the excavation damaged zone (EDZ) of a storage cavern under a minimum internal pressure as well as the development of the healing of damage and the stress to strength ratio under a subsequent maximum internal pressure are investigated project-related. The results of the investigation make it possible to shift the permissible minimum pressure boundary down, allowing the optimisation of decisive economic characteristics of storage caverns. Introduction It has been determined through laboratory tests, that exceeding the damage boundary under high stress to strength ratios generates, among other consequences, damage, dilatancy and increased creep rates and permeability. However the damage, which already existed in the salt rocks and which developed further due to the stress caused by mining activities, may heal as the healing boundary is undershot under very low stress to strength ratios with a high confining pressure as a result of the stress relief (e.g. due to backfill in conjunction with rock convergence or due to an increased internal pressure in the storage caverns) accompanied by positive effects, such as closing of pores and cracks, decrease of permeability and compacted deformation. Therefore the material damage and its healing are the basis for the description of the mechanical behaviour of rock salt. Both inverse processes must be taken into consideration simultaneously using a joint damage parameter.
ABSTRACT A fully dynamic, two dimensional, stability analysis of a highly discontinuous rock slope is demonstrated in this paper. The studied rock slope is the upper terrace of King Herod's Palace in Masada, situated on the western margins of the seismically active Dead Sea Rift. The dynamic deformation of the slope is calculated using a fully dynamic version of DDA in which time dependent acceleration is used as input. The analytically determined failure modes of critical keyblocks in the jointed rock slope are clearly predicted by DDA at the end of the dynamic calculation. It is found however that for realistic displacement estimates some amount of energy dissipation must be introduced into the otherwise fully elastic, un-damped, DDA formulation. Comparison of predicted damage with actual slope performance over historic time span window of 2000 years allows us to conclude that introduction of 2% kinetic damping should suffice for realistic damage predictions. This conclusion is in agreement with recent results of Tsesarsky, Hatzor and Sitar (2002) who compared displacements of a single block on an inclined plane subjected to dynamic loading obtained by DDA and by shaking table experiments. Introduction In this paper we apply fully dynamic discontinuous deformation analysis (Shi, 1993) to a real jointed rock slope which has sustained a relatively well known record of earthquakes over the past 2000 years - the upper terrace of King Herod's Palace in Masada, situated along the western margins of the seismically active Dead Sea rift valley. Since we know the terrace has sustained tremors of known magnitude in documented historic events we have a good constraint on dynamic DDA predictions, from the field. In particular, the amount of required energy dissipation in DDA, or "damping", can be explored by comparing DDA predictions with actual terrace performance over historic times. Thus, the amount of energy dissipation associated with shaking of a real jointed rock slope may be estimated, and the appropriate values can be used for realistic dynamic modeling of jointed rock slopes using DDA. In this research a new C/PC version of DDA is used (Shi, 2001) where earthquake acceleration can be input directly in every time step. A necessary condition for direct input of earthquake acceleration is that the numerical computation has no artificial damping, because damping may reduce the earthquake dynamic energy thus under estimating the damage.

ABSTRACT Given the current widespread use of numerical models for rock mechanics and rock engineering, and the ‘Technology Road Map’ theme of the Congress, it is timely to consider the key issues in matching numerical models to rock engineering problems. The three main aspects are:identifying the mechanisms, variables and parameters that are relevant to a particular rock engineering project; establishing the content and mode of operation of a particular code; and deciding whether a particular code provides an adequate model for a particular project. We summarise the key issues, highlighting the concept of rock mass domains, validation and the ability to present the results of a modelling exercise. We include three compact numerical modelling case examples to illustrate the points. Finally, we also present a ‘roadmap’ to assist in the process of matching a numerical model to the rock reality. Introduction One of the greatest advances in rock mechanics analysis and rock engineering design in recent years has been the development of a number of powerful numerical codes that simulate various aspects of the deformation and failure of rock masses. These codes enable studies to be made of the evolution of rock failure for different rock mass characteristics, different construction geometries and different loading conditions. Modern codes can incorporate many of the discontinuous, inhomogeneous, anisotropic and ‘not elastic’ (DIANE) characteristics of real rock masses. Nevertheless, practising engineers are faced with the problem of knowing which code is most appropriate for their purposes, and whether the results produced by the code are, indeed, representative of reality at their site. This is an outstanding problem in rock mechanics and rock engineering. So, how is the modeller and/or engineer to find a design pathway through the well-mapped subject areas of precedent practice projects and the terra incognita of non-precedent practice projects for any given project objective? In order to be able to coherently design an underground structure in a rock mass, the engineer must be able to predict the consequences of different design options.
The shear behaviour of infilled joints produced from ordinary gypsum plaster (gyprock) and bentonite was investigated in the laboratory under Constant Normal Stiffness (CNS) conditions. Shear tests were performed on saw-tooth profiles having Joint Roughness Coefficients (JRC) of 4.75 and 9.25 under an initial normal stress (σno) of 0.30 to 1.10 MPa, and at a normal stiffness (kn) of 8.5 kN/mm. Test data under the same σno and infill thickness to asperity height ratio (t/a) were analysed for two different sets of JRC. The peak shear stress plotted against the t/a ratio under constant σno revealed an increase in peak shear stress with the increase in JRC, up to a t/a ratio of about unity. The effect of roughness on the peak shear stress was observed to be minimal when the t/a ratio exceeded 1.40. A mathematical model for the prediction of peak shear stress due to the increased infill thickness has been developed based on a hyperbolic stress-strain relationship and energy balance principles. The model predictions are in good agreement with the laboratory observations. Introduction Determination of true shear strength of infilled rock joints is imperative in the design of underground structures in jointed rocks, and in the stability analysis of jointed/bedded rock slopes. The presence of clay and silt infill within the rock joints weakens the overall strength of the rock mass. Evaluation of the shear strength of infilled rock joints is usually carried out in the laboratory using the conventional direct shear apparatus, where the normal load is held constant during shearing, i.e., the Constant Normal Load (CNL) method. In the past, CNL tests on infilled joints have been carried out by several researchers including de Toledo & de Freitas (1993), Papaliangas et al. (1993), and Phien-Wej et al. (1990). Non-planar and rough joint surfaces produce significant dilation during shearing (Kodikara & Johnston, 1994; Indraratna et al., 1999; Haberfield & Seidel, 1998). In the field, dilation is partly inhibited by the surrounding rock mass, depending on the magnitude of normal stiffness. Often, the normal stress working on the shear plane increases with the horizontal displacement, hence, cannot be assumed as constant. Such shear behaviour can be described more realistically through shear tests conducted under the Constant Normal Stiffness (CNS) approach.

A well known rock mass classification system has been altered slightly to address the issues found under remnant mining conditions. By detail study of the expected fracture patterns and local geology, the rock mass is classified to indicate the condition of the hangingwall prior to mining. The risk level of each mining step is evaluated by calculating input parameters for computer simulations from the actual rock mass condition. Seismic activity is catered for by the understanding that large event rates and large magnitude events reduce the quality of the local rock mass and that the rock mass stiffness should be adapted accordingly. A case study is presented to test parts of the protocol. Introduction Mining remnants in the South African gold mines has become a major mining environment as ore reserves are mined into a mature stage where large open reserves are an exception to the rule. Rangasamy and Jager (2002:1), as part of the FutureMine Collaborative Research Programme, conducted a review of remnant mining in South Africa and found that production tonnes from remnants reaches a maximum of 60 percent of total production on some mines in the Free State Goldfields. Remnants are referred to as 'remaining pieces of reef fully or partly surrounded by extensively mined out areas' or 'blocks of ground surrounded by extensive mining' (Jager and Ryder 1999:101). These remnants were left intact, in many instances years ago, and are usually the result of either a financial decision (grade, gold price, production costs) or rock mass intervention (seismic activity, large falls of ground, loss of accesses) (Jager and Ryder 1999:276).

The objective of the study was to estimate the largest shear displacement that could be expected on a pre-existing fracture located in the repository area, due to the heat release from deposited waste. Two-dimensional numerical analyses using UDEC have been performed. The maximum shear displacement, at the fracture centre, amounts to 0.2–13.8 cm depending on fracture parameters. The fracture extension, friction angle and shear stiffness are found to be the most important. Introduction The primary function of a deep repository for spent nuclear fuel is to isolate the waste. If this isolation should be breached, a second function is to retard the transport of radionuclides from the fuel. The canister, the buffer and the host rock work in conjunction to provide these two functions. This study relates to the requirement of having mechanical stability of the rock around the repository. One of the concerns in this respect is the possibility of a large displacement occurring on a pre-existing fracture intersecting a deposition hole. Such a large displacement might jeopardise the intactness of a waste canister, i.e. break the isolation. A large fracture displacement might also result in increased ground water transport from the deposition hole to the surrounding rock mass, i.e. reduce the retardation. The main difficulty in estimating the movements of large rock discontinuities, such as fracture zones or minor faults, is the lack of knowledge concerning their mechanical properties (Leijon, 1995). For the purpose of safety analyses it thus makes it inevitable to choose parameter values within wide ranges. If it is assumed that a discontinuity can be approximated as a singular planar structure where the shear displacement is mainly controlled by friction, the most conservative case is a zero friction angle. An analytical calculation of a two-dimensional case (Figure 1) indicates that, with the most unfavourable orientation, the size of a discontinuity should be on the order of 100 m to get a displacement of 0.1 m. The intention with the analyses performed in this study was to add to the current state of knowledge by performing numerical analyses of a two-dimensional case.

A method to predict stress-induced failures around excavations based on the mapped geological and rock mechanical information is studied. Totally of 7 km of newly excavated tunnels are mapped in the Inmet's Pyhasalmi mine in Finland at depth between 1000–1440 m from which the results and conclusions from the firstly mapped 1.7 km of tunnels are reported. The main rock type at the site is very hard volcanite having uniaxial compressive strength of 230 MPa in median and GSI-value 72–80. The maximum in situ stress around the tunnels is 65–85 MPa. The prediction of observed stress failures was preceded by comparing elastic 3-D simulation results of tunnels with three statistical yield criteria. Read's or Hoek & Brown's yielding criteria are found the most relevant, though, the effect of anisotropy was found to be significant. The most important parameters having a correlation with stress failures are the tunnel orientation and the foliation of rock. Also, the rock type and its strength, tunnel shape and the geological anomalies have their effects. Further, a delay time on mapping was found to clearly diminishing of the most violent failures. Introduction Posiva Oy, responsible for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel in Finland, applied in May 1999 to have the final disposal at the Olkiluoto site. Currently, Posiva Oy is designing an underground rock characterization facility at the Olkiluoto site to complement the site investigations, and also collecting information on cavern excavations and rock mass responses in deep rock conditions. Repository is planned to be excavated in crystalline bedrock at depths between 400 m and 600 m. Under these rock conditions, the in situ stress concentrations on the excavation boundary can exceed the critical strength of the rock and, thereby, initiate rock damage or even failure. Depending on the stress-strength ratio and rock type, failure can vary from minor local yielding to rock burst (Fig. 1). At present, stress failure potential can be evaluated by using the commonly-used engineering and scientific criteria or the rule of thumb. In any case, the rock strength, the in situ state of stress, and the orientation and shape of the excavation must always be known. The latter is normally well known, the in situ state of stress can usually be measured, and the short-term strength of intact rock can also be determined.

A computer program was developed to simulate transient strains and stresses during an overcoring in the situ stress measurement. The solution is based on superpositioning of elastic stresses. The measured strains can be compared with the calculated ones to check if the measured transient behaviour is accordant with the interpreted in situ state of stress. If not, the in situ state of stress can be calculated based on any transient or final strain values. The transient stresses can be compared with the strength envelope of intact rock and thereby estimate the core damage potential. Technically, the developed code fulfilled all the objectives, and the numerical error was found to be less than 5%. The basic idea can be applied also for different overcoring probes with minor modifications and recalculation of stress tensors. The analysed case studies showed clearly the advance of having an objective and practical quality control method to study the reliability of the in situ stress measurement data. The study was set up and funded by the nuclear waste management companies Posiva Oy (Finland) and Svensk Karnbranslehantering AB (Sweden). Introduction When designing an undergroud excavation for great depth, i.e. normally high stress conditions, it is important to have a reliable knowledge of:the magnitude and orientation of the in situ state of stress the strength and critical stress states of the intact rock the pre- and post-failure deformation behaviour of the rock the rock mass quality With an increasing depth and rock stress-strength ratio, the core sample for laboratory testing can be damaged but far more difficult and vulnerable will be the measurement of the in situ state of stress (Martin & Stimpson, 1994, Martino et al., 1997). Practically, only vertical boreholes can be used if the target area is deep below the ground surface. The three dimensional stress tensor can be measured in one point using the three dimensional overcoring methods or interpreted for a larger volume by reopening of the existing fractures (Amadei & Stephansson 1997). In a crystalline rock reasons for unsatisfactory in situ stress measurements can be;discontinuity close stress cell unrecognized anisotropy of the rock (Martin & Christiansson, 1991) heterogeneity of the rock stress or strain induced damage of a pilot hole wall or core
