The model and parameters are then iterated until a fit with observed data is attained. This process is complicated by the offset-dependent variable being the angle of incidence. Thus, successive iterations require successive passes of ray tracing to relate offset to angle of incidence. One important aspect of the presentation herein is that Equations (2) and (3) warrant further contemplation in themselves; the ray tracing requirement has been removed by expressing the but since the emphasis here is on exploration applications, Zoeppritz equations in terms of a power series in source-receiver it suffices to note that equations (3) show A?/7 is relatively insensitive offset. Additionally, the formulation provides direct insight into to the amplitude behavior of the outer end of the spread, the effect of velocity, density, and Poisson's ratio variations on i.e., to the value of r,. This becomes more apparent in those the offset behavior of seismic reflections.

II IZTKII\ model-based VSP-CDP transform was used to image ihe data into the CDP-time domain. The transform results probided better lateral resolution than the surface data. Introduction A Cretaceous sandstone in central Alberta produces oil from thin stratigraphic traps. The proven recoverable reserves from the pool at which our VSP well is located amount to 1 million bbl. Figure 1. The sandstones are uniform and well-sorted, generally with high velocity.

Heavily fractured rock would result in much larger crack densities but synthetic seismograms could still be modeled by the same techniques.) The detailed effects of EDA cracks on shear-wave propagation are sometimes surprising and difficult to interpret.

A 3-component VSP data set was recorded in central Texas. Analysis of elliptical particle motion measured in the VSP data indicated zones of possible anisotropy or fracturing in the subsurface. From the VSP data, orientation of the principal axes of anisotropy in the Austin and Buda units was determined.
