Synopsis This paper indicates that there is a definite need for establishing standard tests for casing centralizers in order to obtain the correct information for proper spacing to insure a satisfactory primary cement job.
Standard tests for casing centralizers would also provide the operator with a uniform basis for comparing centralizers of various manufacturers. The paper describes I) the Purpose and Types of Tests, 2) the equipment used to perform these tests, 3) the centralizers to be tested, 4) the test procedure and 5) the evaluation of test, results.
The equipment and types of tests described in this paper, as well as their evaluation and correlation with field results, have been determined by the authors through a great deal of experimental work performed over the past two years. The paper points out that there are many factors to be determined in choosing the proper centralizer for any particular job and that the only way to determine these factors accurately is to make surface tests that reproduce as closely as possible the severe conditions under which the casing centralizer must perform both while it is being run in the hole and while the casing is being cemented.
It is the opinion of the authors that a fair comparison of different types of casing centralizers cannot be made and that an intelligent means of establishing centralizer spacing for any given hole cannot be determined unless there is a standardized test procedure similar to that outlined in this paper which properly takes into account all of the factors bearing upon centralizer performance.
