SUMMARY: Erosion of a cut in stratified sandstone and siltstone over a ten year period resulted in a surface profile conforming to the zero stress contour calculated in the initial excavation. This paper shows stress contours calculated using a two-dimensional finite-element analysis and the configuration of the eroded cut, demonstrating that the calculated zero stress contour may be used to predict the equilibrium surface of the excavation. INTRODUCTION Unstable regions in rock slopes may be identified through negative minor principal stresses (Bukovansky-Piercy, 1975, Kalkani, 1975) because of the comparative weakness of rock under tension. In case of inclined stratified rock, such as sedimentary formations, the stress condition at the cut surface is determined by the relevant properties of the sequence of layers. A two-dimensional finite-element method incorporating the plane strain assumption and uniformely stressed triangular or quadrilateral elements has been employed for the analysis. Contours of constant stress in the new excavation were derived from these calculations for 2:1 slopes cut in sandstone and siltstone strata. The actual contour of the surface of the cut was measured 10 years after excavation, and it is shown that regions where the rock was in tension have eroded away. SITE CHARACTERISTICS Two cases of excavation for road construction are examined in this study. The road was excavated in a series of Flysch near the Kastraki Hydroelectric project in Greece. The Flysch for this area consists of interbedded sandstones and siltstones of the middle Eocene to the early Miocene. The rock types appearing at the road are weathered siltstone overlying sandstone, which in turn overlies siltstone. The weathered siltstone is light grey and calcareous and contains thin layers of fine grained sandstone. When considerably weathered it is characterized as overburden. The sandstone is grey, possessing a dence texture and contains a few scattered layers of grey shale. The siltstone is grey with fine seams of sandstone, and becomes light grey and friable when exposed. The road excavation cut the flysch series in all directions, and an upslope and a downslope section selected for study are shown in Figures 1 and 2 respectively. In both cases, the cut was at a 2:1 (vertical: horizontal) slope. During the first year after excavation was complete the slope retained its original shape, but shortly afterwards it begun to approach a more stable condition. EXCAVATION STRESSES The excavation stresses were calculated with a two-dimensional finite-element stress analysis. The minor principal stress plots are presented in Figures 3 and 4, which correspond to Figures 1 and 2 respectively. The elevations and distances in Figures 3 and 4 are given in fractions of slope height H from the toe of the cut, while the minor stress σ3 distribution is given in ratios σ3/γh where γ is the average unit weight of the rock. The following properties are used based on values of the same rock at the nearby hydro-electric project: Poisson's ratio 0.20, Modulus of elasticity 1.40E06, 1.60E06, and 2.00E06 in tons per square meter for overburden, sandstone and siltstone respectively; average unit weight 2.60 tons per cubic meter; and ambient stress coefficient equal to 1.00. The material layers are considered parallel to the ground surface. The top layer is overburden, the middle layer is sandstone and lower layer is siltstone. Excavation in Figure 3 results in a narrow tensile stress region along the cut face which widens at the lower siltstone region. In Figure 4, tensile stress regions are formed with smaller widths at the sandstone and larger widths at the siltstone. Cross sections in Figures 5 and 6 show the actual profiles of the slope cuts corresponding to the photographs.of Figures 1 and 2. The excavated slope has reached an equilibrium and the minor principal stress at the surface is zero. This final configuration is compared with the zero stress line of Figures 3 and 4.

SUMMARY: The paper refers to the stability analysis for underground cavities of large cross section, which are to be constructed either without or with minimum lining. Since such cavities may only be constructed in favorable engineering-geologically conditions, i.e. in hard rock masses, their stability is influenced mostly by the number, configuration and characteristics, as well as by latent discontinuities of fissures. The proposed procedure makes it possible to identify the safety factor for each monolith, which is a fundamental condition for establishing of the number, magnitude and direction of the anchors in the underground cavity. The procedure enables us to choose the best location, orientation, size and shape of the underground cavity. The engineering-geological structure of sites in Yugoslavia often calls for the construction of undergroung works in hard rock masses With lithologically or tectonically predisposed fissures. The paper presents an attempt to find a simple procedure to get the prior information on the degree of monolith's stability in the zone around the opening of an artificial underground cavity. The work analyzes the stability of monoliths around circular underground cavity's section (Fig.1). The starting points of the analysis are the following: - Sliding commences when at each point on the sliding surface the shear stress τ, inducted by external forces, reaches the shear strength at that surface. - Stresses in the rock mass around the tunnel opening of circular cross section are determined in the same way as for a homogeneous, isotropic and elastic medium - The rock mass is in the plane strain state. The basic steps in the procedure are the following: - The first step is to define the state of stress around the underground cavity, what enables us to determine the forces acting on monoliths. - The second step is to analyse sliding stability of monoliths alongside the surfaces of discontinuities. Normal forces and tangential forces acting on monoliths are the resultants of the corresponding stresses б n, б n and бe /equations (7).... (11)/. Knowing normal forces and tangential forces, we examine the stability of monoliths alongside the surfaces of discontinuities. This procedure will be shown on a monolith M (Fig.5). As the result of the shear strength of surfaces A3 and A4, it comes to the increasing of the partial safety factors, i.e. we are getting the global safety factors. We obtain the condition that the global safety factors for sliding of monolith M, alongside the sliding surfaces Al and A2 are equal one to another, i.e. This procedure may be the basis for the analysing the stability of monoliths when in the rock mass there is the three dimensional state and in the case when the underground cavity has not only the circular cross section, but has different cross sections. In that case the most difficult problem is to determine the stresses, i.e. forces acting on monoliths. In those cases we may use the finite element method. This procedure put us in the way of obtaining information about the stability of the monoliths around a planned underground cavity, provided that the structure of the fissured medium and the shear strength characteristics at the relevant contact surfaces are known. In such a way we may obtain an advantageous location of the underground cavity connected to that geotechnical aspect. We may determinate the number, magnitude and direction of anchors, if they are necessary, and the best directions for pressure groundings, too.
SUMMARY: Tabular ore deposits form a major portion of the reserves of the coal, potash, trona and limestone that are mined by underground methods while some copper and lead-zinc deposits are also tabular in shape. Oil shale mining represents a new addition to this group. Mining of tabular, extensive, orebodies becomes difficult when the thickness of the orebody increases. For thin seams, longwall methods or room and pillar methods results in good extraction ratios, but as the seam thickness increases, longwall methods are not practical (with present mining machinery) and for room and pillar methods extraction ratios decline because pillar strengths decrease with increased height. Alternative mine layouts must be found to mine thick seams with high extraction. This paper details two such possible mining methods and discusses the major factors in the selection of roof spans and pillar sizes that control the overall extraction ratios. These two methods are referred to as the 'Lane and Pillar' and the 'Rib, Slab and Fill method'. The lane and pillar method, involves mining long parallel lanes between barrier pillars then pillaring by mining cross cuts on the retreat to leave 'small' yielding pillars. Because miners do not need access to the yielding pillar area, these pillars can be designed with a low safety factor. Design for this method includes not only room span and rib pillar dimension selection for the first pass mining, but also estimation of yielding pillar 'post failure' characteristics and ultimate load carrying capacity. Analysis has been performed using the displacement discontinuity model to illustrate the influence of the post failure characteristic of the yielding pillars on the safety of the mining method. The rib, slab and fill method is similar to the above method but here high extraction is gained on the retreat by slabbing the rib pillars. Additional extraction is attained because backfill is introduced to the lanes after the slabbing operation. This fill acts to improve the post failure load bearing characteristics of the rib pillar thereby limiting the ultimate room closure. Primary mining is always adjacent to undisturbed ore under very stable conditions. Slabbing is in the adjacent room between the primary mining and a backfilled room. Analysis of this mining method depends heavily on the assumed characteristics of the pillar behavior. The fill acts only to improve the behavior of the pillar after the peak load has been reached. Analysis using the displacement discontinuity method is presented to demonstrate the significance of this pillar-fill interaction on the overall allowable extraction ratio. Introduction Flat lying tabular ore deposits make up a substantial portion of the reserves of coal, potash, trona and linestone extracted by underground mining methods. Some copper, iron and lead-zinc deposits also fall into this category. Oil shale deposits are another important member of this group, and are the subject of increasing interest as world-wide energy supply problems become more severe. Flat lying tabular ore deposits are typically mined either by room and pillar or by longwall/shortwall mining techniques.

The Committee selects a university to act as host and works with that university in planning and organizing the symposium. These annual symposia are the major technical meetings devoted totally to rock mechanics in the United States at which researchers, educators, and practitioners in the field of rock mechanics can meet to discuss mutual problems and newly acquired knowledge. The symposia provide a forum for exchange of information by approximately 300 to 400 participants, representing both national and international viewpoints. The U.S. symposium was not held in 1974 because of the participation of potential hosts in activities associated with the 3rd Congress of the International Society for Rock Mechanics conducted in Denver, Colorado that year.. During the remainder of the reporting period, symposia were conducted as described below. To disseminate the information presented at the symposia, the proceedings are published and distributed to participants and other interested persons and organizations. For the reader's convenience, information on the availability of proceedings is furnished with the description of the symposia.

SUMMARY: The region of la Clusette belongs to the folded Jura (helvetic bundle). The bed-rock is formed by a suite of beds of limestones and marls. The rock is broken with karst forming. Two kinds of problems came up during the excavation: the overcrossing of the chambers were often full of cave deposits and the area of the east-portal took place in the marls with a small cover partly formed by rock detritus.

SUMMARY: The Clusette Road Tunnel is one of the few three-lane tunnels of Switzerland. Situated on the TIO Trunk Road, nearly midway between Neuchatel and Verrières, it has a length of 1 kilometre, base width at the road level of 12.9 m and an excavation section of about 120 m, the longitudinal slope of the tunnel is of 6 %. The ventilation is of the semi-transversal type. The design and construction of this tunnel which was put into service in November 1975 posed a number of problems related to the nature of rock encountered, limestones and marls of the Jura range and the presence of karstic zones. The present article gives a brief review of these problems as well as of those related to the exploitation and maintenance. 1. GENERALITIES The passage of The Clusette is situated approximately midway between the frontier village of Verrières and the city of Neuchatel on the TIO trunk road which forms the shortest road between Pontarlier and Derne. Constructed about 160 years ago, it was known to be dangerous because of frequent landslides and stone falls. In fact, the valley of "Travers" ends abruptly, in the East, at the Village of Noiraigue because of the presence of the Clusette mountain. The river Areuse enters here in a narrow canyon which excludes a road connection through it with the plain. The rocky slope of the Clusette is formed by a succession of layers dipping towards the North-North West which manifest a certain instability because of the presence of soft Layer's at its base on the one hand and of the errosive action of the Areuse river at its foot on the otherhand. The behaviour of the Clusette mountain can be characterised by an alternance of short active periods, in which landslide and stone falls are frequent and new crevices in the slope are formed, followed by relatively long periods of apparent inactivity. The last important landslide occured in Autumn 1968 due to which the road was closed for a long period. After this incident, the "Grand Conseil" (Legislative Assembly of Neuchatel State) demanded the Government to give priority to the investigations and studies leading to the realisation of a definite solution to the problem of security and to improve winter servicibility (the old road had a width of 5.5 m and a maximum slope of 9.4 %). Three types of solutions were examined in parallel for carrying out a correction extending over 2.83 km of the old road:new alignment by-passing the Noiraigue village by the South and connecting the Brot- Dessous village with the aid of important bridges and viaducts, correction of the old road with incorporation of galleries of protection against landslides and stone falls, partial correction of the old road incorporating a tunnel of 1.0 km length to by-pass the unstable zone of the Clusette mountain. The choice of the final solution was determined above all by the results of the geological studies done by the Institut of Geology of the University of Neuchatel. The conclusions of these studies are summarized below:the soil and rock formations situated on the right bank of the River Areuse are of the same nature as those of the left bank, for 150 to 200 m length, the old road is situated in the unstable zone.
SUMMARY: The road Nr RC 706c up to the Diablerets and Pillon Pass, runs now in the Raverette valley along its unstable slopes. To avoid these unsecure zones, a new bridge is being built, of about 500 m length, 100 m above the river. Its layout has been highly influenced by the geological and topographical conditions of the site which have lead to a limitation of the bearings. A general description of the work is given before the analysis of the foundations conditions, the study of the deep foundations on pits (design, stability, execution).
SUMMARY: Studies conducted to determine the influence of mineralogy and moisture redistribution on the weathering behaviour of illite-bearing Lower-Triassic mudrocks, reveal the paramount importance of the rock material properties. The free swelling characteristics and durability of these mudrocks are probably influenced to a far greater extent by textural (fabric) parameters than by the mineralogy. Long-term strain measurements provide evidence of important anisotropic, differential swelling and shrinkage strains developing in mudrocks of a low durability when these are subjected to moisture redistribution as a result of fluctuations in the environmental humidity, alternating cycles of wetting and drying and prolonged periods of intensive air drying followed by moisture absorption. 1. INTRODUCTION The study of the weathering behaviour of mudrocks presents a special problem due to their wide range of engineering properties, particularly that of durability (Deere and Gamble 1971; Olivier 1979). Rock durability is a significant time-dependent factor in the weathering and disintegration of mudrocks after exposure. The presence of rock types of a low durability can lead to construction problems in both underground and surface excavations if timely preventive measures are not taken (Bieniawski, 1973; Kidd et al., 1974). Olivier (1976) is of the opinion that any engineering assessment which seeks to classify mud rock durability on a quantitative basis, must incorporate parameters which are relevant to the time-dependent weathering behaviour and the actual weathering mechanics of such rock types. This paper deals with the more important aspects of the studies carried out to determine the influence of mineralogy and moisture redistribution on the weathering behaviour of the "non-expandable" Lower-Triassic Beaufort mudrocks exposed in sections of the Orange- Fish Tunnel works (Olivier, 1976) and the author considers that these findings are also applicable to the weathering mechanics of other mudrocks of a similar mineralogical composition. The main objective in the assessment of moisture redistribution was to determine the influence of:Moisture absorption and humidity fluctuations, both of which occurred in the tunnel; and Prolonged periods of intensive air drying, which were encountered in some sections of the tunnel and in the construction shafts and surface excavations for the tunnel appurtenant works. The 82 km long, 5,3 m internal diameter tunnel was constructed for the Department of Water Affairs by conventional methods under a depth-of-cover varying from 30 m to 400 m, in the north-eastern Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The tunnel serves to divert water from the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam in the Orange River to the upper reaches of the Great Fish River (Kidd et al., 1974; Kidd, 1976). As the permanent concrete lining was placed some three to four years after the excavation, the weathering and deterioration of the mudrocks with time, particularly those of a low durability, caused extensive fretting and spalling of the thin skin of exposed rock in those tunnel sections where timely preventive measures had not been taken. 2. PREVIOUS STUDIES ON THE WEATHERING MECHANICS OF MUDROCKS Taylor and Spears (1970) emphasise the importance of the reversible process of intra-particle swelling for the short-term chemical weathering of "expandable" mudrocks. This involves the uptake of water within the crystal lattice of the swelling clay minerals, appreciable quantities of which are contained in such rocks. They, however, consider the initial breakdown of the "non-expandable" mudrock types of the British Coal Measures, which consist mainly of stable-lattice clay minerals (illite and kaolinite) and detrital quartz, to be caused by the irreversible physical weathering mechanism of air breakage (slaking).

SUMMARY: The alpine road Aigle-Les Diablerets-Gstaad is cut, on a distance of 4 kilometers about, in a high limestone cliff of which the stratification is parallel with the ground slope (60° to 70°). On this section the road is pelted with stones which jeopardize the motorist lifes in spite of the yearly cliff cleaning. In order to protect better this road the Highway Authority of Canton de Vaud has built import ants works at the most dangerous spots. The various protective devices against the falling stones are reported further on in terms of the rock features and likewise in terms of the road layout.
SUMMARY: A tripled, on the 5th September 1979, the participants in the Congress to the heart of the calcareous high Alps, in the Massif des Diablerets in Switzerland. The huge overthrows of the earthy crust provoked by the collision of the African plate against Eurasian plate gave rise to the Alps which are constitued by piling of a succession of Nappes removed from SE to NW on tens or hundreds kilometers. The rocks have gone through violent plastic deformations that we perceived in the shape of especially well visible folds in the visited area. The breaking limit of rocks has often been reached or exceeded as the fine fracturing of the rocky massives shows it.
