Abstract. This paper describes the historical development of hydrodealkylation and gives a general look at the present significance of hydrodealkylation in the petroleum and chemical industries. Screening of a wide variety of catalysts with toluene, methyl naphthalene and mixed feeds indicated the desirability of a non-catalytic operation for mixed feed hydrodealkylation. The exploration and finally the process development studies of thermal hydrodealkylation are described. Operation with a mixed feed of toluene plus an alkyl naphthalene concentrate was found to proceed well in the general range listed below: Liq. hr. Sp. Vel. 0.4-0.5, 640-74OoC, 400-1000 psig, H2: Hydrocarbon 4: 1 to 12: 1. The reaction was found to be first orderwith alkyl aromatics and '/z order with Hz. A mechanism is proposed. A brief look at the future of hydrodealkylation is presented. Sp. On propose un mécanisme de réaction. On indique brièvement les perspectives de I'hydrodéalkylation. I. Background Hydrodealkylation of aromatics has grown quite rapidly in the United States. The history of hydrodealkylation cannot be defined in the same fashion as that of the discovery of an element or new compound. It is so blurred into the studies of thermal and catalytic cracking, as well as coke manufacture and the early coal hydrogenation studies, as to make it undesirable to give a man's name and a date to hydrodealkylation history. Abstract. For processes taking place in a flaw state, general dynamics equations can be obtained which can be readily usad in analysing and describing homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic reactions. It is shown that kinetic values for reactions carried out in a flow state can be determined directly from experimental results giving the dependence of the degree of transformation of the original material on its rate of flow into the reaction zone. Techniques have been devised for the calculation of velocity, activation energy, onder and rate controlling steps for reactions taking place in a flow. The theory evolved finds its application in reactions of catalytic cracking of heavy and light gas oils; thermal cracking of individual hydrocarbons and oil fractions; catalytic alkylation of benzene with propylene; dehydrogenation of (butane and other hydrocarbons. The method allows to obtain systems of equations for given chemical processes, which are necessary both for the understanding of the method itself and for the design of reactors, process automation and optimisation. Abstract. The paper deals with the application of hydrogenation for the production of motor, industrial, and other oils. !n contrast to the widely used methods of solvent extraction and adsorption treatment the hydrogenation method is based on the extensive chemical conversion rather than on the extraction of hydrocarbons regarded as undesirable oil components. The kinetics of the hydrogenation process of lube oil fractions in wide ranges of pressures (71 1-3556 psig), temperatures (300-425' C), circulation of hydrogen containing gases and other variables have been studied. The paper presents the results of the studies aimed at the selection of hydrogenation catalysts, mainly those possessing bifunctional properties (cracking and hydrogenation), as well as at the establishment of the principles of conversion of certain hydrocarbon groups in the hydrogenation of lube oil fractions. Specific characteristics of lube oils obtained by the hydrogenation process are compared with those of oils obtained by solvent extraction. The investigations resulted in the development of several versions of the hydrogenation process for producing industrial and motor oils:Hydrogenation of lube oil stocks at high partial hydrogen pressure (2140-3556 psig) in place of solvent extraction to obtain distillate and residual motor oils. Hydrogenation of lube oil stocks at a partial hydrogen pressure of 71 1-1422 psig to obtain products as above. Hydrogenation of distillate fractions to obtain insulating (transformer and others) and turbine oils. Hydrofining (instead of clay contacting) of lube oils and waxes obtained by solvent extraction of lube oil stocks. * Authors' Biographies vide last page Data are presented on the pilot-plant production of the above oils and the results are given of the experimental operation of commercial plants at the New Kuibyshev Oil Refinery. A wide commercial application of hydrogenation processes to obtain high-grade lube oils and waxes is recommended in the conclusions of the paper. Résumé. Abstract. A residue desulphurization process is described in which high-sulphur Middle East reduced crudes are desulphurized to low-sulphur fuel oils. The mechanism and kinetics of this process are presented, and typical data for the European market are given. For example, at a hydrogen partial pressure of 500 psig and with long catalyst life, a high-sulphur Middle East reduced crude requires only 650 scf./bbl. of hydrogen for i5O/o desulphurization. The viscosity of the charge stock is reduced considerably but very little gasoline is produced. A kinetic analysis of this mild desulphurization process is presented. Kinetic expressions are discussed which relate desulphuriziition to space velocity, temperature, and hydrogen partial pressure. In addition, the kinetics of metals removal and asphaltene conversion as well as the inhibiting influence of sulphur and asphaltenec on desulphurization rates are presented. A model of an asphaltene molecule is described and the mechanism by which it reacts is discussed. The factors which influence catalyst deactivation, coke, and metal deposits are reviewed. Control of these contaminants will be discussed as well as the mechanism for their deactivating influence. Abstract. Catalytic hydrodesulfurization as normally practised in refinery operations does not modify the pour point and the cloud point of gas-oils. These can be lowered by processing under more severe conditions, particularly by raising the temperature. However, the yield of this operation is not very interesting because of an important amount of gasoline production by cracking. By modifying the hydrodesulfurization catalyst carrier, it is possible to lower the pour point and the cloud point under conditions where the gasoline production by hydrocracking is far less important. Good gas-oil yields can thus be obtained. The experiments have been carried out with catalysts composed of cobalt and molybdenum oxides supported on silica modified alumina. The reaction mechanism is discussed. 1. Abstract. This paper describes a first approach to the problem of the selective removal in the form of ammonia of nitrogen from mineral oils and shale oils. It deals with a fundamental study of the selective hydrogenation of model substances, such as quinoline and isoquinoline, with the object to gain a better insight into the reaction mechanism and to find the rate-determining steps in the conversion of nitrogen compounds into the corresponding hydrocarbons and ammonia. It could be shown that the decomposition is a multistage process, anilines and/or aliphatic amines being the essential intermediates formed. The type of amine chiefly determines the degree of nitrogen removal and the extent to which aromatic hydrocarbon rings are hydrogenated. 1. Abstract. The present work is a development of former work on the catalytic refining of petroleum crudes and distillates, already presented at previous Petroleum Congresses. The authors have developed a new catalytic process ("Combifining") for the treatment of crudes or asphaltic residues. The first step of the process is a coagulation and precipitation of asphaltenes, together with a great part of mineral components, obtained by contacting the oil with catalysts, at temperatures between 350° and 450°C, in presence of hydrogen, at medium pressures. The first result of thermocatalytic deasphaltation is a substantial improvement of the characteristics of the residue (viscosity, percentage of ash, sulphur, carbon residue). Moreover, the process may make subsequent refining operations easier and more convenient. Among these the hydrodesulphurization of wide cuts on desulphurizing catalysts of conventional type is particularly described. The process is presented in two alternatives: in the first the precipitated asphaltenes are separated from the liquid by filtering, and the deasphaltized liquid is subsequently submitted to conventional refining treatments. The second alternative foresees the combination of deasphaltation and hydro-desulphurization (or other operations) in a single unit: the crude oil or residue, after the asphaltenes have been coagulated, is transferred hot under pressure to a stripper, light and medium distillates are drawn off over top, a heavy residue including all the precipitated asphaltenes leaves the bottom. The distillates are continuously transferred to hydro-desulphurization on conventional catalysts. The combination of the deasphaltizing process with other refining operations, like coking, "steam-cracking", and hydro-gasification was considered likewise. The catalytic deasphaltation may be shifted towards hydrocracking by varying operating conditions. * Authors' Biographies vide last page The percentage of light and medium distillates may beconsiderably increased at the expense of the heavy residue. In any cose the process is characterized by low hydrogen consumption and by the use of relatively low pressures. Résumé. Abstract. This paper describes an improved hydrocracking process developed by the Esso Research and Engineering Company and the affiliated Esso Research Laboratories at Baton Rouge, La. The process employs a new catalyst which consists of a small amount of a noble metal on a new support. The catalyst is distinguished by its high tolerance for nitrogen compounds normally present in many petroleum feed stocks, and is regenerable if this is ever desired. Virgin, catalytically cracked, and coker gas oils boiling up to 870 o F. and containing 40-2600 ppm. of nitrogen have been processed over this catalyst in isothermal pilot units at 1500 psi with good maintenance of catalyst activity. High octane naphthas, good quality reformer feed stocks and good quality jet fuels have been made with this catalyst. The isothermal unit results have been confirmed in a large adiabatic pilot plant, utilizing conventional gas injection between catalyst beds for controlling the exothermic reaction. The adiabatic pilot plant has been operated both with once-through feed and with recycle of unconverted product to extinction. Recycle processing a cracked gas oil blend consisting mostly of coker gas oils and containing 750 ppm. nitrogen, resulted in an ultimate cs-400 o F. naphtha yield of 113 vol. % with a hydrogen consumption of 2400 SCF/B. For using the new catalyst system instead of catalysts more sensitive to nitrogen, relative economic studies indicate a 15-20 % reduction in plant investment, with corresponding savings in operating costs. Abstract. ISOMAX is discussed in terms of the reactions which occur in this hydrocracking process. These reactions are interpreted in terms of alternate mechanisms of overall reactions with indications of rate limiting steps. Product distributions are given and interpreted with respect to the types of the parent molecules. Laboratory and pilot plant studies on various stocks together with the results of commercial operation will be discussed. The Isomax' process has been the subject of a number of technical papers's2, so that a lengthy review of the process is not necessary. This paper concerns itself primarily with the chemistry of the process and also presents some of the results obtained from the recent commercial operations. The Isomax process usually consists of two steps. The first serves to remove nitrogen, oxygen, Sulfur and metal contaminants from the feedstock, while the second step effects the hydrocracking into the desired hydrocarbon fractions. The first step can, therefore, be looked upon as a purification or cleanup step while the second step can be considered as a true hydrocracking part of the process. The first step will produce some hydrocracking; however, its main function is that of feed preparation for the second step. First Step or Purification Reactions In considering the performance of the first step it has been thought for some time that, in order to provide a suitable charge stock for the second stage, the most important impurity to be removed from the feedstock is combined nitrogen. Considerable work has been done in processing clean oils which * Trademark Résumé. From the results of this work, the following conclusions have been drawn:All of the added nitrogen impurities are very readily removed from the clean oil. When a gas oil or a nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon is processed under the same conditions, the nitrogen removal is less complete. The nitrogen removal is facilitated as the operating pressure is increased. These conclusions are substantiated by the results shown in Table I. The results indicate that the removal of naturally-occurring nitrogen compounds from technical methylnaphthalene is more difficult than the removal of nitrogen comp

Abstract. ISOMAX has met widespread acceptance since this general type of hydrocracking was announced in 1959. The use of lower temperatures and pressures than required by previous hydrocracking processes and the attainment of improved results compared to conventional cracking processes make it a particularly attractive refining tool. More than 60,000 B/D of capacity will be on stream by mid-I 963. This represents the first hydrocracking capacity built in nearly 20 years. The use of isocracking catalysts in application of ISOMAX is described. These catalysts were developed to permit certain desirable non-equilibrium reactions to dominate the course of conversion. Several of these reactions are described, and their application is illustrated. Results of pilot plant and commercial operations at pressures as low as 800 psig and temperatures as low as 500' F are presented. Tests are described with feeds ranging from light naphthas to heavy vacuum gas oils and deasphalted residuum fractions. The use of ISOMAX processing to obtain extreme variations in product distribution is described. Production of low freeze point jet fuel and low pour point middle distillate from high pour point Middle East crudes is also described. Commercial operating experience with isocracking catalysts is reviewed. Applications in both new and existing refineries are illustrated. Combinations with conventional thermal and catalytic cracking processes are discussed. General conclusions are presented on the use of ISOMAX processing in a variety of current refining situations.
