Abstract. The production of pure aromatics is very interesting from the economic as well as the scientific standpoint. The most important processes are described. It depends on the composition of the feed stock, as well as on economic points of view, which of these processes for the production of aromatics should be applied in a particular case. Exclusive distillation which is a very simple process proved to be the most suitable method for the isolation of pure aromatics if hydrogenated benzenes from cokeoven plants are used as a feed stock, the non-aromatics' content being very low. On the other hand, the advantages of the extraction processes will become apparent if stocks with high contents of non-aromatics are charged, such as reformates or hydrogenated pyrolysis naphthas. The demand for pure aromatics is increasing considerably at the present time and cannot be met by increasing the production of benzene from coke-oven tar. Therefore, it must be anticipated that the above mentioned base stocks which are obtained from petroleum, will become the main source for the production of pure aromatics, Between these two borderline cases - namely coke-oven benzenes and reformates or pyrolysis naphthas - there are cases where the necessary investments for an extraction process would be uneconomical, but where a super-fractionation would not be adequate. This gap can be closed by applying the azeotropic distillation process particularly if only pure benzenes are desired, as is usually the case at the present time.

Abstract. High temperature pyrolysis studies have demonstrated the effects of severity of operation and hydrocarbon configuration on the distribution of olefin products. The effect of compound-type on the yields of useful olefins, diolefins, and aromatics was substantial. Straightchain paraffins were particularly suitable for ethylene production, and cycloparaffins for butadiene. Formation of other olefins was markedly influenced by position of branches on paraffinic isomers. It was found possible to predict product distributions obtainable from typical petroleum fractions on the basis of feed composition. The calculation technique has provided a rational, quantitative basis for evaluating and selecting pyrolysis feed stocks to meet specific market requirements. Ability to predict product distribution from feedstock analysis makes plant design optimization possible when feed composition is selected. Illustration of effects are presented in the form of comparisons of economics based on European price structures. The exceedingly high growth rate of the plastics, chemicals, and synthetic rubber industries has been aided by the supply of low cost olefinic raw materials. These chemical building blocks, such as ethylene, have been made available through recovery from refinery gas streams, and by the dehydrogenation and cracking of gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons, Production of two to four carbon atom olefins and dienes is presently in excess of 20 billion * Authors' Biographies vide last page pounds per y

Abstract. The paper deals with the application of hydrogenation for the production of motor, industrial, and other oils. !n contrast to the widely used methods of solvent extraction and adsorption treatment the hydrogenation method is based on the extensive chemical conversion rather than on the extraction of hydrocarbons regarded as undesirable oil components. The kinetics of the hydrogenation process of lube oil fractions in wide ranges of pressures (71 1-3556 psig), temperatures (300-425' C), circulation of hydrogen containing gases and other variables have been studied. The paper presents the results of the studies aimed at the selection of hydrogenation catalysts, mainly those possessing bifunctional properties (cracking and hydrogenation), as well as at the establishment of the principles of conversion of certain hydrocarbon groups in the hydrogenation of lube oil fractions. Specific characteristics of lube oils obtained by the hydrogenation process are compared with those of oils obtained by solvent extraction. The investigations resulted in the development of several versions of the hydrogenation process for producing industrial and motor oils:Hydrogenation of lube oil stocks at high partial hydrogen pressure (2140-3556 psig) in place of solvent extraction to obtain distillate and residual motor oils. Hydrogenation of lube oil stocks at a partial hydrogen pressure of 71 1-1422 psig to obtain products as above. Hydrogenation of distillate fractions to obtain insulating (transformer and others) and turbine oils. Hydrofining (instead of clay contacting) of lube oils and waxes obtained by solvent extraction of lube oil stocks. * Authors' Biographies vide last page Data are presented on the pilot-plant production of the above oils and the results are given of the experimental operation of commercial plants at the New Kuibyshev Oil Refinery. A wide commercial application of hydrogenation processes to obtain high-grade lube oils and waxes is recommended in the conclusions of the paper. Résumé. Abstract. A novel catalyst has been developed by the British Petroleum Company for low temperature isomerization of pentane and hexane. The catalyst, based on a noble metalcontaining composite, is conditioned by a novel activation procedure which is carried out in the plant reactor. Should the isomerization catalyst become poisoned by impurities - including sulphur compounds and aromatic hydrocarbonsfull catalyst activity can be restored by "in situ" regeneration and reactivation. This feature of the process points to maximum flexibility and long on-stream processing potential. Pilot plant trials have yielded data which show that once-through product from hexane isomerization gives a good approach to thermodynamic isomer distribution at 1.0 v/v/hr space velocity with liquid product recovery in excess of 98 per cent weight. A flow scheme for an integrated isomerization process is described. This includes a hydrodesulphurization and a hydrogenation treatment for the feedstock to remove catalytically sulphur and aromatic compounds. Maximum catalyst activity is maintained in the isomerization section by employing hydrogen gas recycle, and by injecting a catalyst promoter into the feedstock. This promoter may be recovered and recycled to the isomerization reactor. An estimate of the operating cost of utilities, chemicals and catalyst gives a figure of 30 cents/ barrel of feedstock.

Abstract. The submerged-flame cracking technique is a special modification of the autothermic cracking of liquid hydrocarbons with oxygen to produce acetylene, ethylene, propylene, and synthesis gas. A distinctive feature of the process is that it is adapted for treating not only all kinds of fully vaporizable hydrocarbon feed stock, such as gasoline, but also incompletely vaporizable substances, such as crude oil. Moreover, no liquid by-products or carbon black are obtained because the undesirable by-products are continuously recycled to the burner. In the burner, a large excess of hydrocarbons is burned with oxygen in a very hot flame. The gases flowing at velocities in excess of 1 O00 m./sec. are quenched beneath the surface of the liquid hydrocarbons. More than 90% of the calorific value of the liquid hydrocarbon feed is retained as heating value of the cracked gas. Due to the very brief exposure of the gases to high temperatures and the special flow pattern of the gases in the burner, the process can be conducted at pressures up to 8 atm. gage without appreciable loss of acetylene. Nearly three parts by volume of cracked gas are obtained per part by volume of oxygen. Besides, only the pure oxygen need be compressed, whereas the gas obtained, which is susceptible to resinification, can be processed without further compression. Substantial economies are thus achieved in the subsequent acetylene separation. The bulk of the heat evolved in the process is recovered as low-pressure steam.

Abstract. Amongst the processes for the cracking of hydrocarbons by means of circulating heat carriers so far only the sand cracking process has stood its ground. The initial commercial sand cracker with a capacity of 18,000 tons of ethylene per annum was put on stream at Erdölchemie Dormagen about four years ago and has been operating satisfactorily since. Four further units with a total annual output of 100,000 tons of ethylene are under construction at present. The sand circulation system has proved successful and despite the large quantities of sand in circulation erosion of the refractory lining has been insignificant. The provision of battles across the fluidized bed has quieted down the gas current and has suppressed wild boiling and pulsation, in spite of the high gas velocity. Vaporized gasoline which is injected above the fluidized bed of the reactor quenches the cracker gases, eliminates secondary reactions and takes part in the cracking reaction under milder conditions. Quenching with vaporized gasoline increases the olefin yield without any major extra cost. Cooling of the cracker gases will in future plants be accomplished by a heavier oil and an oil cycle, which also effect proper washing of the gases and permit utilization of the waste heat for the preheating of the feedstock and for the generation of process steam. The paper further discusses the use of other granules as heat transfer medium, instead of sand. Preliminary tests already showed a reduced consumption of 1 :30 compared with sand. By the addition of a granular catalyst to the circulating sand it is possible to convert propane to propylene with an efficiency of more than 70 per cent. Moreover, the application of elevated temperatures in conjunction with suitable catalysts permits the production of an overall gas which can be used as rich gas or town gas. Abstract. The Shell Gasification Process is a non-catalytic, flame-type, continuous partial combustion process followed by efficient means for heat recovery and gas cleaning. Developed through the years 1954-1 956, it has now found world-wide commercial application in the production of synthesis gas for the ammonia industry. The main features of the process are discussed and a review of its applications is given. Finally some recent developments, which permit further reduction of operating costs, are described. INTRODUCTION Since the First World War a great number of thermal and catalytic processes for the gasification of hydrocarbons have been developed. In the United States natural gas has become an important source of water gas for the chemical industry, and the wellknown catalytic methane-steam reforming process has become widely used in areas where cheap natural gas is available. In 1962, the ICI announced the successful development of a catalyst suitable for steam reforming of light distillate hydrocarbon fractions with final boiling points up to 2ûû°C. Deep desulphurization of the feedstock is required. A gas of low hydrocarbon content, suitable for synthesis, can be produced if an after-burning step for further conversion of methane is included. *ter Haar, L. W. I Netherlands I Physicist / Techn. For the gasification of high-boiling liquid oil fractions the continuous steam reforming process is unsuitable, because of coke lay-down on the catalyst. Thermal and catalytic processes of the cyclic type have been developed to overcome this difficulty and are today in operation in the town gas industry of many countries. These cyclic processes, however, are not particularly suitable for the chemical industry because of the high hydrocarbon content of the final gas produced. Abstract. The refining of petroleum to make products suitable for marketing has always depended on a more or less rough classification by molecular weight resulting from distillation operations. The increasing use of hydrocarbons as chemical intermediates has encouraged the development of processes which will separate hydrocarbon components of specific type. Pure aromatics for example are now exrtacted on a large scale from refinery streams. The chemical industry is finding increasing uses for paraffin products containing upwards of 95 per cent n-paraffins. Products in the CIO - C 13 range are required for detergent manufacture, particularly when the detergent is required to be "biologically soft". n-Paraffin products of comparable purity and in the c14 - c18 range are used in the manufacture of plasticisers such as phenyl alkane sulphonates. A new technique for separating n-paraffins from hydrocarbon mixtures is made possible by the use of molecular sieves. This is a particularly elegant imethod based on size separation at molecular level, but up to the present has only been commercially exploited for separating n-paraffins up to about CIO 1) 2). BP has developed a process for the manufacture of high purity n-paraffin products in the CIO - C 18 carbon number range. INTRODUCTION The refining of petroleum to mak

Abstract. A new process for the production of ethylene from crude oil has proved its value in commercial operation. Special features are the use of thefluidized-solids technique and the coupling of the endothermic cracking reaction with an exothermic partial combustion of lowvalue reaction products with oxygen, the two reactions taking place simultaneously but in separate parts of the fluidized bed. The heat requirement is substantially covered by the petroleum coke formed in the cracking and by the high-boiling cracking oil that is completely recycled to the reactor. Besides crudes, heavy oil fractions, crude residues, or fuel oils may be used. By adjusting the process variables, the exothermic reaction can be controlled in such a manner that sufficient petroleum coke for maintaining the fluidized bed is formed even when crudes with very low Conradson carbon and a high percentage of lowboiling hydrocarbons are used. According to the new process, at temperatures of 700-750 ' C, high yields of gaseous olefins are obtained with only such by-products as can be employed for chemical processing. Pilot-plant runs have shown that by using the same technique but a fluidized bed of inert material instead of petroleum coke also gaseous hydrocarbons or lowerboiling petroleum fractions can be cracked at 750-830' C with good yields of gaseous olefins.
