ABSTRACT: This paper deals with the field investigation carried out at several longwall gateroadso of different coal mines in India. The rock pressure and data deformation at the extraction perimeter of the gateroads of different mines were measured. The mines were selected at varying depths and at different geo-mining conditions. The revealed some of the unknown horizon for the stability of the longwall gateroads. Attempts have been made to provide an optimum design guidelines for different types of longwall workings. It is expected that the study will be helpful for the stability analysis and design of supports for longwall gateroads.
INTRODUCTION Problems related to ground movements at longwall gateroads hold a major hazard for longwall workings. It has been observed that much attention is paid towards supporting the longwall face and proper supporting of the longwall gateroad is not done in time., In most of the instances, the basis of support selection and design of support system for longwall gateroads have been past experience and visual inspection in the gateroad. The design of support system using rule of thumb may cause the gateroad to be either under supported or over supported. Over design of a support system leads to wasteful expenditure escalating the total cost of production, on the other hand under designed may become much more costly causing r fatal accidents, Collapse of the roof due to under design at the gawoad may stop the entry towards longwall face and thus total production' comes to a standstill. Optomising support system design calls for an adequate knowledge of rock pressure distribution and strata' deformation at the extraction perimeter of the gateroad. Continuing efforts are being made to develop necessary insight into this intractable problem from laboratory tests and numerical modeling. The behaviour and performance of a structure in the rock mass, however may not match the laboratory determined properties.
