Abstract This paper addresses the health, safety, and environmental (HSE) training in the seismic industry. The successful HSE training program of a major seismic contractor is described as implemented and experienced over the past three years.
The training methods and techniques used by Western Geophysical to educate all levels of crew management and labor are described. These methods and techniques include the various assignments of in-house trainers and programs and contracted professional trainers and programs. Variations in training approaches are needed to maximize the impact and effectiveness on the targeted audience.
Over the past three years, hundreds of employees ranging from line Cutters to top-level management have received HSE training. Statistics generated over this period reflect the success of this training. A significant reduction in accident frequency rates has been recorded since this training was implemented. The number of near misses reported by the crews has significantly increased. Job safety analyses are conducted to develop written safety procedures and hazard registers have been generated. The most dramatic change is noted in the increased awareness and concern of our employees in all HSE matters. This attitude shift has been the most significant change.
Introduction In the past three years, the seismic industry has experienced dramatic changes. Advancements in acquisition techniques on land and sea have increased the complexity of operations. At the same time, the priorities given to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) issues have increased. All of this has occurred in a market that continues to demand better quality data at reduced rates.
HSE training has evolved in this period of change. The need for HSE training was obvious to those who saw the shift in the market and costs associated with accidents within the company. Training is one of the key elements in our safety management system. It is the element that allows us to communicate our policies and procedures to our employees. HSE training demonstrates management's commitment and interest in its employees and motivates those employees to do their jobs correctly.
Western Geophysical has identified many of its training needs through past experience and knowledge. We also have been aided by guidelines set by the International Association of Geophysical Contractors (IAGC) and the E&P Forum. These demands, as well as an increasing demand from our clients for better- trained personnel, set the wheels of change in motion.
