The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) announced this week that its implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies generated an additional half-billion dollars in value last year. The company credited more than 30 AI programs for contributing to the gains, highlighting their impact across its entire value chain. ADNOC also reported that these AI initiatives helped to prevent the emission of up to a million metric tons of CO2 from 2022 to 2023. "Artificial intelligence is one of the most important economic and social game changers of our era, and it can play a crucial role in accelerating a just, orderly, and equitable energy transition," Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO of ADNOC, stated. "At ADNOC, we have integrated artificial intelligence across our operations, from the control room to the boardroom, and it is enabling us to make smarter decisions and better protect our people and the environment."

Every spring, the National Occupational Research Agenda's (NORA) Oil and Gas Extraction (OGE) Sector Council holds a Health and Safety Summit that brings together government, industry, and other partners to highlight state-of-the-art knowledge on assessment and control of workplace hazards in the oil field. The next summit has the theme "Improving Safety Culture and Human and Organizational Performance in the Oil Field" and is set for 10โ11 April. The NORA OGE Spring Health and Safety Summit is a free virtual event, typically held on the Zoom platform. Past summits have provided four hours of informational content on each of two back-to-back days.

The S-Hub consortium, consisting of ExxonMobil Asia Pacific and Shell Singapore, has been selected to work with the government of Singapore as lead developers for a cross-border carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. S-Hub and the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) signed a memorandum of understanding in December to coordinate the planning and development of a CCS project, capable of capturing and permanently storing at least 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide a year, by 2030. Commitment to proceed will be subject to definitive agreements between the parties. Capturing 2.5 million tons is roughly equivalent to replacing approximately 1 million gasoline-powered cars with electric vehicles. "Carbon capture and storage has the potential to be a key decarbonization pathway for Singapore, especially for sectors with hard-to-abate emissions such as energy and chemicals, power, and waste," said Lim Wey-Len, executive vice president for the EDB.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has completed its environmental review of the proposed New England Wind project offshore Massachusetts. The BOEM estimates the proposed project, previously known as Vineyard Wind South, would generate up to 2,600 MW of electricity, enough to power more than 900,000 homes. "Diverse public input was essential to BOEM's careful and thorough analysis of the environmental impact of the proposed New England Wind project," said BOEM Director Elizabeth Klein. "This document demonstrates the administration's steady progress towards attaining clean energy goals that will better the lives of Americans now and in the future." Since the start of the Biden/Harris administration, the Department of the Interior has approved the nation's first six commercial-scale offshore wind energy projects.

A new research project from the University of New Mexico (UNM) examined the conditions of the workforce in New Mexico's Permian Basin. Gabriel Sanchez, director of the school's Center for Social Policy, and Shannon Sanchez-Youngman, director of the school's Center for Participatory Research headed the Southeastern New Mexico Oil and Gas Workforce Study. "Our study had two main goals, to identify paths to improve the working conditions of oil and gas workers and to help inform areas in workforce training that should be addressed as the state transitions to clean energy production," Sanchez said. The study, commissioned by the nonprofit Somos Un Pueblo Unido, dove into the quality of life experienced by oil and gas workers in the state's Permian Basin--the majority of whom are Hispanic New Mexicans. This incorporated the past and present conditions and how the influence of clean energy could shift their career plans moving forward.

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has announced that it generated 500 million in value by deploying artificial intelligence (AI) in 2023. The value was generated from the integration of more than 30 AI tools across ADNOC's value chain, the company said. Additionally, the company said, these applications abated up to 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions between 2022 and 2023, the equivalent of removing around 200,000 gasoline-powered cars from the road. The milestone marks the start of the company's multiyear program to accelerate the deployment of AI to enhance safety, while driving down emissions and driving up value. "Artificial intelligence is one of the most important economic and social game changers of our era, and it can play a crucial role in accelerating a just, orderly and equitable energy transition," said Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the UAE's minister of industry and advanced technology and the managing director and group CEO of ADNOC.
