The authors detail the development of a technique based on surface-to-borehole controlled-source electromagnetics (CSEM), which exploits the large contrast in resistivity between injected water and oil to derive 3D resistivity distributions, proportional to saturations, in the reservoir. The Earth is complex in all directions, and hydrocarbon traps require closure—whether structural or stratigraphic or both—in three dimensions. By racking up exploration agreements in the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Bahrain, Eni took a big step forward in its pledge to tap into the Middle East’s vast swaths of highly prospective oil and gas acreage. The French major will become operator of the Ruwais Diyab concession, and ADNOC says additional companies are lining up to partner on the emirate’s other unconventional areas. Partnerships are proving key in developing and sustaining big offshore projects internationally, with Eni now teaming with ADNOC off Abu Dhabi and farming out another stake in the Zohr gas field off Egypt. The feasibility test conducted offshore Abu Dhabi demonstrated the successful and safe deployment, seismic-data acquisition, and retrieval capabilities of the AMV and 3D sensor array. As part of a project that involves the use of four artificial islands to drill and complete more than 300 extended-reach-drilling (ERD) wells in a giant offshore oil field, several completion designs have been piloted for brownfield development.
SEG Geophysical Inputs to Static and Dynamic Model Building The content of the workshop will cover all approaches to building models at all scales - from the basin model where pore pressure prediction from seismic velocities is critical to ensemble modeling to the use of 4D seismic data to tune the dynamic model. All types of geophysical data and products will be discussed. The primary objective of the workshop is to identify elements of seismic modeling of reservoir and fluid response that are not well understood or used, where more research and development is required and where the service industry or machine learning could be focused. Africa (Sub-Sahara) An 816-mile 2D seismic acquisition program was completed on the Ampasindava block, located in the Majunga deepwater basin offshore northwest Madagascar. The data will provide improved subsurface imaging of the large Sifaka prospect and will potentially mature additional prospects in the Ampasindava block to drill-ready status. Sterling Energy (UK) holds a 30% interest in the Ampasindava production sharing contract, which is operated by ExxonMobil Exploration and Production (Northern Madagascar) (70%). Asia Pacific Production began on the Liuhua 19-5 gas field in the Pearl River Mouth basin in the South China Sea. The field is expected to hit peak production of 29 MMcf/D this year. China National Offshore Oil Corporation (100%) is the operator. Drilling began on the YNG 3264 and the CHK 1177 development wells onshore in Myanmar.
The objective of this work is to characterize the fault system and its impact on Mishrif reservoir capacity in the West Quran oil field. Determination and modelling of these faults are crucial to evaluate and understanding fluid flow of both oil and water injection in terms of distribution and the movement. In addition to define the structure away from the well control and understanding the evolution of West Qurna arch over geologic time.
In order to achieve the aim of the work and the structural analysis, a step wise approach was undertaken. Primarily, intensive seismic interpretation and building of structure maps were carried out across the high resolution of 3D-seismic survey with focusing on the main producing Mishrif reservoir of the field. Also, seismic attributes volumes provided a good information about the distribution and geometry of faults in Mishrif reservoir. The next step, it constructs 3-D fault model which will be later merged into the developed 3D geological model. West Qurna/1 oil field situated within the Zubair Subzone, and it is structurally a part of large anticline towards the north. The observation of seismically derived faults near Mishrif reservoir indicated en-echelon faults which refer to strike-slip tectonics along with extensional faults. The statistic of Mishrif interval faulting indicates a big number faults striking north-south along western wedge of anticline. The seismic interpretation, in combination with seismic attributes volumes, deliver a valuable structural framework which in turns used to build a better geological model.
In this paper, the work demonstrates a better understanding for the perspectives on the seismic characterization of the structural framework in the Mishrif reservoir, and also for similar heterogeneous carbonate reservoirs. Further, this work will ultimately lead to improve reservoir management practises in terms of production performance and water flooding plan.
Africa (Sub-Sahara) Shell's new natural gas discoveries in Egypt are estimated in initial quantities at about 500 Bcf with more reserves possible, said Aidan Murphy, chairman and managing director of Shell Egypt. The discoveries, in a concession area of north Alam El-Shawish in the country's western desert, could yield 10% to 15% of the total production of Badr el-Din Petroleum Company, the 50/50 joint venture of Shell and Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation that is expected to manage the operations. Eni reported that the Laarich East-1 oil well in Tunisia has a delivery capacity of approximately 2,000 B/D. Spudded in June, the well discovered hydrocarbons in Silurian and Ordovician sandstones while reaching a final depth of 13,487 ft. The well has now been connected to production. The company continues to drill Tunisian exploration prospects that have been identified on 3D seismic surveys.
Africa (Sub-Sahara) Eni has begun production from the Vandumbu field and made a new oil discovery in the Afoxé exploration prospect in Block 15/06 offshore Angola. First oil from the Vandumbu field, through the N'Goma floating production, storage, and offloading vessel, was achieved in late November, 3 months ahead of schedule. Vandumbu is approximately 350 km northwest of Luanda and 130 km west of Soyo. This, along with the startup of a subsea multiphase boosting system in early December, boosts oil production from Block 15/06 by 20,000 B/D. The rampup of Vandumbu is expected to be completed in 1Q 2019. Block 15/06 is being developed by a joint venture formed by Eni (36.84%, operator), Sonangol (36.84%), and SSI Fifteen (26.32%). Asia Pacific Ophir Energy's Paus Biru-1 exploration well in the Sampang production-sharing contract (PSC) offshore Indonesia has resulted in a gas discovery.
This paper presents a multidomain integrated workflow that combines geophysics, borehole geology, fracture modeling, and petroleum systems analysis for characterization and resource assessment of basement plays. A 3D fracture model is developed by integrating image log interpretation and seismic data to assess the reservoir potential of fractured basement. The 3D fracture modeling is done using the discrete fracture network (DFN) approach with image log interpretation and other fracture drivers serving as the main input. The DFN is upscaled to generate fracture porosity and fracture permeability properties in a 3D grid. The upscaled fracture porosity is used to estimate the petroleum initially in place (PIIP) for the prospects. Multiple 2D petroleum system modeling is performed where large fault throws are identified from seismic interpretation. The petroleum system study helps in identification of areas with most prolific hydrocarbon generation and expulsion centers, which, coupled with the cross-fault juxtapositions, are the main locales of charging for basement reservoir. Further analysis of all the elements of basement play (i.e., source, reservoir, seal, trap, and migration) is done, and prospective areas within the basement play are delineated with high geological chance of success.

The case study demonstrated here is the innovative workflow for fault delineation technique on a 3D seismic volume in B-173A Field of Heera Panna Bassein (HPB) Sector, Western Offshore Basin, India. B-173A is located 50 kms west of Mumbai at an average water depth of about 50 m. The field was discovered in the year 1992 and it was put on production in Aug 1998. In B-173A field there are two hydrocarbon bearing zones one is gas bearing Mukta (Lower Oligocene carbonates) Formation and oil bearing Bassein (Middle to Upper Eocene Carbonates) formation.
The present study is an extended workflow on Advanced Seismic Interpretation using Spectral Decomposition and RGB Blending for Fault delineation. Iso-frequency volumes are extracted from Relative Acoustic Impedance data instead of seismic data itself.
The workflow is for effective fault delineation and it consists of Spectral Decomposition of relative acoustic impedance data and RGB Blending of discontinuity attributes of different Iso-frequency volumes.
It is observed that RGB blend volume of discontinuity attributes provided more convincing results for fault delineation as compared to the results of traditional discontinuity attributes.
