Drilling Operations

Automated drilling control (ADC) has been implemented at scale on the Norwegian Continental Shelf market over the course of the last five years. The return on investment for the stakeholders has been tangibly demonstrated through reduction in well construction cost, and ultimately the effect this has on the lifting costs for liquids produced from those assets. With the wide-spread adoption of automated control for rotary-steerable drilling tools in fixed geometric sections, the natural next step was to combine this technology with formation evaluation tools, and geo-steering workflows, for production reservoir sections. The operator and service company worked for over a year to develop interfaces required for the seamless flow of data from logging-while drilling resistivity measurements, through surface acquisition, processing, geo-steering workflows, real-time well planning and finally into steering commands passed back downhole to the RSS. The presentation will present the results of the September D-3 well in the Johan Sverdrup field where 70% of a 8-1/2" was autonomously drilled.

Geological studies and seismic surveys can indicate an oil or gas prospect, but the only way to know if that prospect contains oil or gas is to drill wells. Get an introduction to the basics of the rotary drilling process and learn the dramatic advances in drilling technology that have taken place in recent years.
Upon completion of this module, the participant should be able to identify reservoirs that are suitable candidates for horizontal or multilateral wells, apply knowledge of the reservoir to a selection of the well trajectory, and select the best general completion design for a horizontal or multilateral well in a given reservoir.
GeoSteering is the application of geologic and engineering skill to direct a horizontal or extended-reach wellbore path, based upon knowledge of the enclosing stratigraphy, with the expressed aim of maximizing wellbore exposure to the target reservoir. This Topic reviews valuable insights into the GeoSteering process, provided by a leading company with experience gained over the course of steering nearly 2000 horizontal wells.
Establish well control precautions and procedures. Design drill string and bottomhole assembly. Upon completion of this module, the participant should be able to: outline mud system specifications for individual hole sections based on well conditions and drilling objectives, establish basic well control requirements, specify circulating system requirements and evaluate hydraulics practices based on offset well performance, review offset bit performance as a basis for developing bit selection criteria for a new well, provide general recommendations for the drill string configuration and design of the bottomhole assembly, and review rig specifications and capabilities in the context of drilling program requirements.

Monitor drilling parameters and well progress. Take steps to optimize bit runs, mud system performance and directional control. Anticipate drilling problems and work to minimize their impact. Upon completion of this module, the participant should be able to: optimize drilling performance through careful monitoring and analysis of well parameters, select bottomhole assembly configurations for various hole intervals and operating conditions, oversee routine cementing operations in shallow hole intervals, diagnose a stuck pipe incident and outline fishing procedures, and monitor drilling parameters for indications of abnormal pore pressure and take the appropriate initial actions in response to a potential kick situation.
The Research Council of Norway has awarded a grant to Fishbones AS to assist in the next round of development of the company's pioneering IOR (improved oil recovery) stimulation method aiming to extend the technology's reach into tight reservoirs by 50%. The 118,000 (NOK 1.25 million) award--part of an initiative to reduce emissions and raise efficiencies in the oil and gas sector--bolsters the company's joint work with Aker BP which holds a 17% stake in Fishbones AS and applies the technology at the Valhall field. The concept (called "fishbones" because the laterals' shape resembles a fish skeleton) was initially developed for an offshore field trial at Valhall from 2008 to 2012, according to Aker BP. But it was not until Aker invested in the technology's creator Fishbones AS in 2017 that it began to include the method to raise production from Valhall's soft, fine-grained chalk reservoir. Norway has produced oil and gas at Valhall for 40 years, and Aker BP is currently working on a new central platform that the Norwegian operator will use to sustain production for 40 more years.
