As the newly appointed Regional Director for Europe, my first update aimed at briefly introducing myself. In this second update, the first of 2024, I am excited to wish and very happy 2024, but most importantly unveil our comprehensive strategy for the next three years. SPE President Terry Palisch is joined by Dana Otillio, vice president of SPE's marketing and communications, to discuss how members can maximize their membership by leveraging multimedia content.
SPE is firmly focused on the future of our industry, energy transition and the technology and process developments toward lower carbon and net zero. Join in the discussion of new technologies, challenges and opportunities, the latest news and developments, and resources to grow your knowledge. In each topic section you'll discover: CURRENT NEWS: what's going on in the industry today and how others are responding to the topic, in our Journal of Petroleum Technology news and features Challenges for Net Zero and Energy Transitions: An overview of challenges facing the industry on the path to Net Zero. Thriving in a Multi-Generational Workforce during the Energy Transition: Highlights effective ways to bridge various generational approaches to work in today's energy landscape. Technology Advances and Energy Transition for Sustainability: Discusses initiatives relating to the sustainability aspects such as leveraging carbon capture, utilization and storage to enable sustainable energy supply.

Pieridae Energy has reconfirmed its expectations to sell its abandoned Goldboro LNG project prior to the end of June 2024. Proceeds will be used to partially repay its 22 million convertible bridge term loan which matures on 13 December 2024. The Canadian independent said last November that it was walking away from the project, which it had been pursing since 2012. Once the sale is completed, it will mark the conclusion of Pieridae's pivot away from east coast LNG and toward an Alberta-focused natural gas production and processing business. "Our intent to divest our LNG business was previously communicated, and we advanced the planned sale of the Goldboro Nova Scotia LNG assets in the fourth quarter of 2023," company President and Chief Executive Darcy Reding told investors this month.
The Department of the Interior has announced a proposal for a second offshore wind energy auction in the Gulf of Mexico. The proposed lease sale includes four areas offshore Louisiana and Texas totaling 410,060 acres, which the department says have the potential to power 1.2 million homes. "Today's announcement is another step forward in the Biden/Harris administration's pursuit of building a clean energy future and permitting 30 GW of offshore wind energy capacity by 2030," said Interior Secretary Deb Haaland. "We are taking action to jumpstart America's offshore wind industry and using American innovation to deliver reliable, affordable power to homes and businesses, while also addressing the climate crisis." Since the beginning of the Biden/Harris administration, Interior has approved the nation's first six commercial scale offshore wind projects, held three offshore wind lease auctions--including offshore New York and offshore in the Pacific and Gulf Coasts--initiated environmental review of 12 offshore wind projects, and advanced the process to access and establish additional Wind Energy Areas in Oregon, the Gulf of Maine, and the Central Atlantic.

Ipieca, the global oil and gas association for advancing environmental and social performance across the energy transition, is marking its 50th anniversary. It was established in 1974 at the request of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to act as the engagement channel between UNEP and the oil and gas industry on environmental and climate issues. In the 5 decades that have followed, the non-lobby association's scope has expanded to cover social performance and mainstreaming sustainability, and it now works with a wide range of UN bodies across its strategic pillars of climate, nature, people, and sustainability. The association brings experts from its member companies together with its partners in UN, non-governmental organizations, and academic organizations to share knowledge and develop good practice guidance. To date it has published over 300 good-practice guidance to advance climate action, environmental responsibility, social performance, and sustainability.

Ipieca, the oil and gas association for advancing environmental and social performance, and the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) have updated their guidance for assessing medical facilities. Oil and gas operations frequently need to rely on existing medical facilities in their area of operations. The assessment of these facilities capabilities is an essential step in the preparation of medical emergency response plans. To assist health professionals in this process, Ipieca's Health Committee has updated Report 588--Medical Facilities Assessment to ensure it is up to date with current practices. The report serves as a checklist for medical professionals to assess local health facilities by guiding them through key elements that should be considered.
