SPE Chapters from around the world participate in this quick-fire quiz covering a wide range of topics relevant to the E&P industry. Through this contest, the best students display their expertise and knowledge to a global audience. The PetroBowl Championship took place during the 2022 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition (ATCE) in Houston, Texas, USA 3 October 2022. The Championship consists of 32 teams. These teams are selected through Regional Qualifiers which take place across the six PetroBowl Super Regions. 5 teams qualify from each Super Region, who join the two finalists teams from the 2022 Championship to determine the 32 teams.

SPE Member Michael Song Wins Australia's Top 100 Future Leaders Award

Michael Song, a final year petroleum engineering student at Curtin University, Perth, Australia, and 2016 president of the Curtin University SPE chapter won the Orica Mining, Oil, and Gas Award in the GradConnection's Top 100 Future Leaders competition. GradConnection is a recruitment platform that links students and graduates to employment opportunities. On winning the award, Song said on the GradConnection website, "I am an individual who strives toward excellence in all aspects of my life. Within my studies I have demonstrated excellence through receipt of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Western Australia Scholarship in 2015 and selection to represent the Science & Engineering Department at Curtin University on a short exchange program in Germany earlier this year. This experience allowed me to develop an appreciation for diversity, an insight into the European lifestyle, and professional practices and the ability to overcome language and cultural barriers to communicate effectively. Outside of my studies, I have held numerous executive positions in the SPE chapter at Curtin University over the past 3 years. Through my involvement with the chapter I have proved my leadership capabilities and believe I will continue to do so when I enter the mining, oil, and gas industry in the future."

Student Link Column

This Student Link column is designed to raise awareness about actions being taken by YEPP and SPE chapters around the world to extend the reach of SPE benefits to students. It will highlight new and ongoing programs that promote and ease the transition from being an active member of an SPE student chapter to being an active member of an industry SPE chapter. Just as YEPPs need mentoring from more experienced members in our industry, students need mentoring from young professionals. SPE is an excellent way to foster the functional links between students, young professionals, and industry leaders. One of the main objectives of Student Link is to increase the number and quality of young professional initiatives toward students and vice versa.

SPE Young Professionals: Building Bridges

Have you seen what is happening out there? Young professionals in the petroleum industry are joining together, interacting, and networking in ways never previously seen in our industry. Young professionals are reaching out to students to share their enthusiasm about their careers and provide a lens into their exciting futures. The interaction with a successful young professional gives students insight into the opportunities that exist in the industry. Students have the chance to see the types of new technology that are being used in the industry. They are able to see with their own eyes the kind of career progression available and the career path options that they can begin pursuing immediately. Young professionals have organized themselves, first locally and, over the past 2 years, internationally. They have created programs to accelerate their development, social events to build their technical and social network, and a variety of programs designed to ease the transition from university life to professional life. So, you ask, what is so new?
