The Department of the Interior has announced a proposal for a second offshore wind energy auction in the Gulf of Mexico. The proposed lease sale includes four areas offshore Louisiana and Texas totaling 410,060 acres, which the department says have the potential to power 1.2 million homes. "Today's announcement is another step forward in the Biden/Harris administration's pursuit of building a clean energy future and permitting 30 GW of offshore wind energy capacity by 2030," said Interior Secretary Deb Haaland. "We are taking action to jumpstart America's offshore wind industry and using American innovation to deliver reliable, affordable power to homes and businesses, while also addressing the climate crisis." Since the beginning of the Biden/Harris administration, Interior has approved the nation's first six commercial scale offshore wind projects, held three offshore wind lease auctions--including offshore New York and offshore in the Pacific and Gulf Coasts--initiated environmental review of 12 offshore wind projects, and advanced the process to access and establish additional Wind Energy Areas in Oregon, the Gulf of Maine, and the Central Atlantic.

Ipieca, the global oil and gas association for advancing environmental and social performance across the energy transition, is marking its 50th anniversary. It was established in 1974 at the request of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to act as the engagement channel between UNEP and the oil and gas industry on environmental and climate issues. In the 5 decades that have followed, the non-lobby association's scope has expanded to cover social performance and mainstreaming sustainability, and it now works with a wide range of UN bodies across its strategic pillars of climate, nature, people, and sustainability. The association brings experts from its member companies together with its partners in UN, non-governmental organizations, and academic organizations to share knowledge and develop good practice guidance. To date it has published over 300 good-practice guidance to advance climate action, environmental responsibility, social performance, and sustainability.

Sara Gentilini, founder of GEOfood, discusses how her organization supports the sustainable development of local communities and helps increase achievement towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Sara shares the history and purpose of UNESCO Global Geoparks and how she came up with GEOfood. She shares her unique definition of sustainable development and outlines her five sustainable food and agriculture principles. Sara also discusses how geophysicists can use their skills to impact sustainable food and agriculture. This is a unique topic that might inspire some new lines of thinking for your projects.
With the help of industry sponsors and affiliated societies, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) selects industry experts each year to travel the globe offering lectures on the hottest geophysical techniques and topics. Lecturers typically speak for 45 minutes to one hour and offer a variety of locations and dates. Selection as a Distinguished Lecturer is viewed as a major honor and recognition of excellence by the SEG. In addition to recognizing an individual's contributions to the science or application of geophysics, this position is an active effort to promote geophysics, stimulate general scientific and professional interest, expand technical horizons, and provide a connection to SEG activities and practices. Presents on current SEG initiatives that directly connect to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), specifically the humanitarian work achieved by Geoscientists without Borders (GWB) program.
