Capital providers shifted away from oil and gas investments in recent years due to a period of low returns and growing interest in the energy transition. However, that lack of investment and newly minted supply security concerns are now driving oil and gas prices to the highest levels in recent memory. With higher prices, the market has started to question if the dormant mergers and acquisitions space will liven up again. In this SPE Live, Tuba Firincioglu and Sarp Ozkan discuss how capital markets have shifted their view on oil and gas investments, whether there is a shift in their thinking with higher prices, and what this all means for potential consolidation.

This was a rough year. The world's biggest challenges generally got worse, or at least more complicated. Our biggest existential threat, climate change, is no longer a scientific model of the future; it's now a relentless daily challenge. This year, yet again, heat records were shattered, wildfires and dangerous air spread over unprecedented areas, and flooding and storms destroyed thousands of lives. Even the (seemingly) world's most powerful woman, Taylor Swift, had to postpone a concert in Brazil because of the heat.

Yves Lamontagne is a brilliant technical innovator who has had a major impact on the mining exploration community. While he started by developing instruments, he has focused his business on the service side using his own proprietary solutions (both hardware and software) to conduct operations all over the world. Because of his attention to technical detail and technology's constant evolution, the growth of a business was always secondary to the technical advancement. That does not mean that Lamontagne was not astute about the bottom line -- just that he did not desire a big organization. He formed Lamontagne Geophysics in 1979, which commercialized UTEM, taking a lot of personal financial risk to get where he is.

Tom R. LaFehr is an American geophysicist noted for his expertise and advancement of the field of geopotential methods in geophysics, particularly in potential fields methods. Dr. LaFehr was awarded the Maurice Ewing Medal in 1997 and the Cecil Green Enterprise Award, with Kwok C. Chan, in 2009. Tom LaFehr and Kwok Chang are receiving the Cecil Green Enterprise Award for their vision, perseverance, and significant personal financial risk in founding LCT in 1987. This company soon evolved into the most recognized service and software company in the domain of potential field data acquisition, processing, interpretation, and integration with seismic. Through various mergers and acquisitions, LCT achieved a dominating position and now acquires approximately 85 percent of marine gravity surveys.

Kwok C. Chan was born in Hong Kong, attended UC Berkeley's Engineering Geoscience Program where he received his BS (1974), MS (1975), and PhD (1978). His thesis adviser was B.K. Bhattacharyya with whom he published a number of important papers. Dr. Chan was co-founder of LCT with Tom LaFehr. LCT was an amazing success story, especially given the economic climate of those days. Starting very small, it grew to well over 100 people and was involved in data acquisition, processing, interpretation, and software development.
