The European Parliament recently approved the Artificial Intelligence Act that ensures safety and compliance with fundamental rights while boosting innovation. The regulation, agreed in negotiations with member states in December 2023, was endorsed by members of the European Parliament (MEPs) with 523 votes in favor, 46 against, and 49 abstentions. The regulation aims to protect fundamental rights, democracy, the rule of law, and environmental sustainability from high-risk artificial intelligence (AI), while boosting innovation and establishing Europe as a leader in the field. The regulation establishes obligations for AI based on its potential risks and level of impact. "We finally have the world's first binding law on artificial intelligence, to reduce risks, create opportunities, combat discrimination, and bring transparency," said Italian MEP Brando Benifei.

Sixteen college student teams in the US will receive 1.2 million in funding from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to research and develop innovative solutions that address environmental and public health challenges. The funding is part of the EPA's People, Prosperity, and the Planet (P3) Program, launched 20 years ago with the goal of designing environmental solutions that move the country toward a sustainable future. Each program will receive a 75,000 grant to fund the project over 2 years. Of the 16 recipients, six are focused on environmental solutions. "EPA is pleased to mark the 20th anniversary of our P3 program by announcing this impressive round of projects that are tackling critical issues such as removing PFAS from water, combating harmful algal blooms, and materials recovery and reuse," said Chris Frey, assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Research and Development.

Background Executed in the year 2016, the Paris Agreement was an enormous environmental protection achievement as it was the first-ever legally binding agreement that not only committed 169 countries to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions but also united the world under one goal, probably for the first time ever as far as we can go back in the history books. The Paris Agreement also fostered a new culture creating a global behavioral trend targeting the elimination of GHG emissions. This is not strange at all when you think of the risk that we all share, a risk that can change the face of our planet as we know it and drastically affect the human race. The reason why the human race united must reduce GHG emissions is that this group of gases is characterized by its capacity to trap heat in the atmosphere, and hence elevate its temperature. Carbon dioxide is the most prevalent GHG (82%), and it is generated heavily through the combustion of fossil fuels.
