Gender diversity and inclusion in the oil and gas industry has been widely promoted in the last decade to advance women in leadership roles. Following this, the SPE Java Section launched an initiative to encourage and empower women in the industry. The section held a webinar in November, which was moderated by Niesharsa Triaswari from BP Indonesia. In the webinar four high-profile women discussed and shared their leadership and experience in the oil and industry: Shauna Noonan, 2020 SPE president and director of artificial lift engineering at Oxy; Evita H. Legowo, general director of Oil and Gas Government of Indonesia (2008-2012) and professor at Swiss German University; Melanie Cook, president of ExxonMobil Indonesia; and Dian Andyasuri, president of Shell Indonesia. The opening session was led by Shauna Noonan, who shared her experience and first steps in the industry when she first came to Indonesia working for Chevron.
Read how our members are building their careers and benefitting from joining the SPE eMentoring program as both mentors and mentees. "There is so much satisfaction to be gained from investing in someone's career development as a mentor. There is also much to be gained from investing in yourself and seeking out being mentored."
One of my focus areas as SPE President is strengthening the feedstock of incoming talent into our industry. In my January column, I talked about industrywide initiatives under way to attract and retain this talent. This month, I want to engage with our members on the importance of effectively mentoring these bright, young minds. While I reflected upon setting my goals for the new year, I began to think about all of the important people in my career who not only helped me set high goals, but also provided support and guidance in achieving those goals. Some people were assigned to be my mentor, while others did it informally by providing advice during opportune moments.

The V-shaped recovery for oil demand is likely to end up looking lopsided. The recent rapid rise in consumption is expected to stop before it gets back to the peak seen earlier this year. In the region’s second bankruptcy of the month all of the operator’s assets will be sold to a private equity energy group, pending court approval.

Getting an abstract selected is an invitation to submit a manuscript for presentation and publication into OnePetro. The author still has an obligation to write a quality paper that delivers on the thesis that was promised in the abstract. Writing a good paper takes time, especially after rewrites from internal peer feedback, so it is best to start the process soon after being notified about abstract acceptance. A few years ago, SPE began checking papers for plagiarism during manuscript submission, so take advantage of the opportunity to check the paper yourself prior to submission. It is also important for the technical committee to reach out to authors to review their drafts and provide guidance.

New SPE President Shauna Noonan issues her first address in the organization’s top volunteer positon while donning the “Calgary White Hat,” which is the traditional symbol of the largest city in Alberta, Canada. This year’s SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) wrapped up with the ceremonial induction of the new 2020 SPE President, Shauna Noonan, who is the director of artificial lift engineering for Occidental Petroleum. Noonan’s ascendance to the organization’s top volunteer position comes after she served on the SPE’s board of directors and authored and coauthored more than 25 technical publications. An SPE member since her time as an engineering student at the University of Alberta, Noonan said it was “surreal” to be assuming the presidency in her home province. The annual conference was held in Calgary for the first time.
SPE has always been strong and provides great value. I am one of those people who believes we can always be better. That is why I plan to emphasize our core strengths and how we can continue to build on them and grow stronger with the industry we serve. Members who take advantage of what SPE offers will find that it enriches their careers, as it has mine. I originally joined SPE as a student at the University of Alberta.
