Water treatment systems in the North Sea differ from those in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico (GOM). This paper provides a detailed understanding of these differences and provides insight into the design of water-treatment systems in general. In this study, a pilot plant with a capacity of 50 m3/d was used to conduct flotation, filtration, and adsorption trials for produced-water treatment at a crude-oil gathering facility. A recent webinar covered the varieties of current technology for flotation equipment and provided an in-depth look into flotation technology and the options surrounding offshore applications. The author reviews advances in produced water treatment, particularly offshore, since the 1960s.

Rising oil production in the Permian Basin has created an opportunity for midstream companies to acquire and expand pipeline infrastructure to handle a predicted spike in produced water. The company makes good on a pledge to reduce freshwater use and replenish the fresh water it uses. In a recent acquisition, H2O Midstream will own and operate Encana’s produced-water gathering system in Howard County, Texas, and will expand it to also serve third parties.
Sourcing water for hydraulic fracturing, and disposing of produced water, are constraints and significant cost items in the Permian Basin. Some of the produced water can be treated and reused by using a water life cycle approach.. The $10-billion deal will add liquefaction and export capabilities to the existing facility in Sabine Pass, Texas, according to a Reuters report. Golden Pass currently handles up to 2 Bcf/D of natural gas imports to North American markets. A deal with the UK-based energy and chemicals company could fetch up to $3 billion for ConocoPhillips, which is transitioning out of the North Sea to focus on US shale operations.
